Hi mate,
I've been every year for the last 4 years, 2 Classic and 2 normal 24 hours. It's an amazing weekend that you should definitely experience.
I always use Travel Destinations for the crossing, and we always camp. You're among the cars, can drink and not worry about driving, and depending which campsite you use you'll be right next to the track. Maison Blanche is a good campsite, track-side, next to the start/finish and last two chicanes and easy access to the paddocks and Bugatti circuit. We go Wednesday to Monday, Portsmouth-St Malo is best as it's about 2 hours drive away on country roads, but Dover-Calais works well to as long as you don't mind the 4 hour drive on mainly motorways.
Any questions just PM me...we've tried pretty much everything and figured out a lot of things (places to see/things to do/places to eat etc)
If you do come down and end up on Maison Blanche come have a beer. We'll be in an Aston Martin DB2 and a Porsche 996
Regards, Phil

It means your ferry is on Thursday departing and Monday coming back. If you ask the about Portsmouth to St-Malo it costs a little bit more (not much) but is worth it for the overnight crossing, better scenery and driving roads.
