I wish they would scrap the tax altogether and put a penny or 2 per litre on the price of fuel, it would make things so much better for those of us with lots of vehicles. But how about us who drive alot for a living on a self employed basis? Fuel is easily the priciest commodity as it is . That is actually one of the arguments for rather than against ! Last year I did 2000 miles between MOT's yet paid the full VED. A rep who does 50,000 miles and therefore uses the road more pays the same amount as me ! Putting the duty onto fuel would then mean those that do the higher mileages pay higher rates of duty to reflect that. Self employed are lucky in that at least they can offset their motoring expenses again their income tax. And no - I don't want VED being put onto fuel but simply stating one of the reasons it's touted about. Paul h

I've always thought that road tax was unfair, the guy who drives 40k miles a year pays the same as some old lady who does 1k.
curse word I was to slow :-)

Hope they don't add it to VED, everything will get more expensive if they do The amount of tax they generate from a rep doing 40k a year is crazy.

I've been reflecting on this for an hour or so. When adding VED to fuel was previously discussed it was assumed there would still be a notional amount still payable to provide for the processing. Removing the issue of the disc already saves a massive amount in postal costs, processing costs, number of Civil Servants at DVLA and such. Realistically the bulk of the revenue from VED comes from vehicles made after 2001. From March of that year the duty payable was based on emissions. Vehicle manufacturers have therefore reduced the emissions and thus the amount of annual VED payable by buyers of their products. The knock on effect is the government will have seen a decrease in the amount of money generated by VED yet still suffered the same administration cost - it cost the same amount to process a NIL / £30 VED payment and issue of disc as that for a pre 2001 £210 VED payment ! Anyway what I'm wondering is if this is the start of a planned introduction of VED on fuel in a couple of years after all ?

So thier reasoning for scrapping displaying a tax disc is because it is obsolete due to computer systems being more than adequate.... .so what about all the peopel who have been fined for failure to display (even though having valid tax) within recent months.
they admit its uneccessary and thats what they are fining for, the systems are adequate now not the night before the law comes in.
would they leave someone in jail that comitted a crime against a law that becomes legal the next month.?

I think I am all for this new system of not having a disk
but one thing that irritates me is that, for example car insurance on a new policy - I have had new policies and it has taken a week or so for the info to show online as the vehicle insured, if in the meantime before its updated you pass a anpr and you are flagged up for no insurance, it only takes a really awkward police officer to potentially have your car impounded, however it doesnt work the other way - if you cancel your policy it comes off the system that minute!!!
so I hope that the computer system will be instantly updated, as soon as the cashier at the PO takes your money into the till.
we don't suffer this problem with mot's though, when you are handed your certificate [now just a reciept] you know its on the system cos the computer produced it.

They should scrap VED with no additional charges on fuel, they make enough out of us on fuel, insurance and maintenance already

They should scrap VED with no additional charges on fuel, they make enough out of us on fuel, insurance and maintenance already But.. there are over 35 million vehicles on the road in the uk, even if you say the average price for 12 months tax is £100 (my car's cost £500 for the pair in tax) - thats alot of money to right off lol. Another report suggests it was £5.9 billion for 2012 & £27.3 billion in fuel duty (not including VAT! Thats about £5.46 billion!) So... if my Maths doesnt fail me to badly. If they scrapped VED, then in therory fuel prices would have to go up arround 21% which would put petrol from £1.30 to £1.56 a litre! or about £12 a tank for me. I use about 20 tanks a year in the Golf which is actually £30 cheaper than my road tax at £270, but I only do about 4-5k a year. Hmmm...

Next they just need to implement 3rd party cover for the car (included in the road tax), you know like they have done in Oz for 20+ years & that would be the end od uninsured drivers & would (in theory) bring car insurance down to a more reasonable level. +1 to this. It was a bit of a revelation when I bought a rego'd car over there and didn't have to bother with any paperwork until it ran out a few months later. ISTR in some states the annual inspection is tied to the rego, so no need for two government bodies (DVLA vs. VOSA over here) - very efficient. I'm not sure I like the idea of abandoning tax discs though. The cost to DVLA for stuffing a bit of paper in the post is a minuscule part of the operation. But when you get pulled because the computer says the car's not taxed you'll have no comeback at all. At least when I get stopped because a mobile ANPR has wrongly reckoned my car is not in the MID, I can demonstrate otherwise by calling my broker instead of getting my car impounded.

Charging extra for DDebit - tax on a tax. Taking the P155 I'm sure most of my monthly bills give me a discount for paying by DD! Ah, but most bills (eg electricity) are paid in arrears, so if you pay monthly by DD you cost the company less in interest. VED is paid in advance, so if you pay monthly by DD you cost the gummit money in interest. One thing that's been said is that the premium charged to pay for 6 months of tax will drop to 5% instead of the current 10% - I assume that this reflects the reduction in admin/printing cost.

Your argument seems a bit about face to me. if I pay in arrears then I have the product before I pay for it. ie I'm using credit and should be charged interest. If I pay in advance then they have my money before I get the product, this can be invested to earn interest before then being used to pay for it. Also if paying by DD then I'm not going to be paying at the post office and I assume they get a cut! Lets face it they know most of us will use the DD method as it's less hassle and one less thing to remember, hence an easy way to fleece us for a few more quid.

If I pay in advance then they have my money before I get the product, this can be invested to earn interest before then being used to pay for it. I think you minsunderstand my point - that's exactly what I'm saying. Apologies if I wasn't clearer in my post. If you pay your utility bills quarterly, then there will be a certain amount of credit interest factored into the calculation. If you pay by DD, the amount of money outstanding on your account at any one time is lower, so the interest that the utility company pays to borrow that money is less, hence your discount for paying by DD. And as you say, when paying in advance that money can be invested to earn interest from the moment that you pay it. When paying over the year by DD, you prevent them from earning so much money in interest, hence an increase in cost. Also if paying by DD then I'm not going to be paying at the post office and I assume they get a cut! No doubt, but so do the banks for the DD service. Lets face it they know most of us will use the DD method as it's less hassle and one less thing to remember, hence an easy way to fleece us for a few more quid. Can't argue with that.

Imagine the poor people who's role was to put tax discs in envelopes who are now made redundant. There are tens of thousands, if not more, people in jobs that are massively wasteful for the taxpayer. We can't keep propping up their employment with money from the coffers just because they need a job. That's what gets the economy in a mess in the first place.

If they cant get a job, we are still paying them but they wont be doing anything. But I do agree that the old system was flawed and dated.

I would hate to have ved put onto fuel, I am disabled and my vehicle is duty free! My car is my legs, and increasing the cost of fuel means I can't afford to get out and about!

instead of a tax disc what about an mot disc, as i would much prefer to see that a car is actually roadworthy. This also means millions of tax disc holders don't get thrown in the bin.

I got pulled up a year ago in the Maestro Van cos the ANPR camera in the police car behind me flagged the van up as not being 'Taxed'. It had continuously been taxed for around 4 months into a 12 month disc.
I told PC Plod to walk around and help himself to a gander at the disc in the windscreen. How would that scenario have turned out without the physical evidence in my possession?
If they're going to rely purely on a database, it needs to work properly!
