Hi guys, I'm looking into getting myself a mk1 caddy pick up but i'm unsure on the insurance side of things.
I cant seem to get an online car insurance quote as its telling me i have to insure it as a commercial vehicle, and I'm definitely not going to be using it for business or commercial use at all, just my daily.
So knowing that a few of you one here have these and other vans/pickups, is there a way around this? Or do i just need to bite the bullet and let them rape me for uaing a "commercial vehicle"?
Cheers Rob

Phoning the insurance companies is the only way to get real quotes.

With it being a Caddy, make sure you phone a specialist up. Adrian Flux can be very good with modified comercial's (thats what it will be classed as regardless)
(Any women reading the next statement, I'm sorry - but this happened to me more than once) If you phone Adrian Flux up and you get a woman, I will put money on them not being helpful & the price they have is the only price they can do - I saved £1000 by hanging up and phoning back & speaking to someone who knew what they were on about. This happend twice with AF, but they were the only company that would give a good quote on a modified pickup (Hilux - First quote £1700 - ended up insured for £680!)
As i said, please don't take that the wrong way, but that is what I found.
Just another thought, I have had a T4, Suzuki Supercarry & MK2 Caddy Van's insured through Tesco & Direct line in the past with mirrored no claims & they were coverd for under £400 tpft with full comercial use (didnt need it as they were just used for a bit of fun) So if your keeping it 100% standard, try Tesco/Direct line van insurance quotes - you may be surprised.

It might be cheaper to insure for carriage of your own goods anyway, ins co have never understood goods vehicles used privately. Adrian Flux quoted £3k to insure my transit......NFU were extraordinarly helpful.

AutoNet Insurance.
Used them for the past 3 vans, as they were the cheapest around by miles.
Comes as standard with own equipment and tools coverage.
I had the same problem with them being vans, and told that I'd have to go the commercial route...

I had an Escort van insured with them for 3 years and always found them cheap enough. The only thing to watch out for with a commercial policy is,even fully comp, you can't drive other cars on your policy like some car policies allow

I imagine age still plays a huge factor with commercials too?

Co-Op used to insure privately owned/used commercials and quite cheaply too. My Ford Ranger DC (classed as comm vehicle) is currently insured with NFU. They were cheapest of anybody.
Re Adrian Flux, I'm amazed they're still in business to be honest the number of disgruntled customers I've come across over the years. I fell out with them 20 years ago when they trebled the amount I was paying on a specialised vehicle for no apparent reason. Been a few complaints on various forums recently over agreed values, and cancelling policies for seemly no reason other than they can.
