Hi all
I've had this trusty old Jag since the summer and it really has been a lovely thing to waft about in. However with my 911 project facing a very distant completion date, it's time for me to move the mighty XJS on to free up some cash to put into a car where my heart truly lies. A Porsche. So if anyone with a clean, late 944 or preferably 928 fancies a trade please let me know.
SPEC
- Sage Green/Grey metallic with Biscuit hide interior
- Sport specification including switchable transmission, no sunroof, high performance factory dampers and optional JaguarSport steering wheel
- 4.0 Straight Six engine/approx 240 horsepower
- Electric everything including seats, mirrors, central locking etc.
- 150,000 miles with FSH and a folder full of receipts and invoices
- 3x sets of OE keys and all the original user manuals including sales literature etc
BODYWORK
This XJS is in super condition overall with stunning paintwork and no rust at all. During the summer I tidied up the underside of the car and went over the whole underside and arches with a wirebrush and a rust repelling concoction of Waxyoil and Schultz so it is pretty much future proof. Being a later XJS the rust issues are somewhat mitigated anyway which is nice.
MECHANICALS
The car drives really well and feels very modern and tight with excellent roadholding. I once owned an '89 V12 (sold to Oldbus a few years ago) which was good, however the balance with the lighter 4.0 straight six engine makes a world of difference to the overall driving experience. It actually feels sporty whilst still being very comfortable! Being a sport it has the switchable 4 speed automatic transmission which is much improved over the original 70s 3 speed unit.
All brakes are good with plenty of meat on the pads and discs including the dreaded inbound rear arrangement. The suspension is also drum tight all round and the car feels planted and most importantly - safe on the road as opposed to unwieldy and downright dangerous as previously experienced driving rough old XJS's!
The engine is spot on and purrs exactly as you'd expect. There are no cooling issues and it doesn't lose any oil. It has covered around 150,000 miles and as a result is nice and healthy.
ELECTRICS
Everything on the car works exactly (bar the aircon which I am coming to) as it should including the Jaguar factory head unit which is nice. I have a tape adaptor for connecting an iPhone etc and the stereo sounds bloody amazing for a 20+ year old car!
INTERIOR
Belying the age and mileage of the car, the interior is in really good shape. Minimum wear to any of the seats or wood veneer trim makes this XJS a lovely place to be. The slender sport steering wheel is much improved over the massive 4 spoke type found in most of these and it is overall very comfortable and pleasant. You won't find any damp either which can only be a bonus.
The headlining is tidy but will need replacing. It is nice and taught as it is braced with a couple of plastic capping strips which to be honest you don't even notice. I did remove it and attempt to repair it but it's sagging again now so hey ho! It's around £150 to fix and very straightforward to be honest, it doesn't bother me. During this time I also washed the 20 years of grime out of it do it is nice and clean. I can fit new headlining at cost if required.
ISSUES
- The headlining as pointed out above
- Aircon bearings in the pump shot so the belt has been removed. It was a job I was going to do around August/September but seems pointless now it's freezing anyway!
IN SUMMARY
This is a very clean and usable XJS with plenty of tax and MOT. More importantly it drives really well and better still, is cosmetically very good... Driving this car evokes a really sense of occasion, and a kind of '80s business casual' vibe which is right up my street to be honest. It is fun to own to in fairness cheap to run too. Classic insurance is cheap and the car isn't too bad on the old jungle juice for a 4.0. Not only that, it seats 4 and the boot is massive!
The car always gets admiring glances wherever she roams which is nice!
I'll get some pictures up tomorrow but for now here is a little walkaround I did earlier on Youtube:
Any questions please ask! As mentioned above I am ideally looking to trade for a 944 or 928.
Thanks!![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
