Features include dual zone climate control, rear parking sensors, one-touch electric windows all round with remote open/close, remote locking, electric heated mirrors, trip computer, steering wheel radio controls, electric height adjust on front seats, many airbags, many storage spaces, many courtesy lights, power steering, ABS, 'Concert' audio system with amplifier and subwoofer, rear headrests / armrest / cup holders, retractable load cover and retractable dog guard / luggage guard, masses of cabin space and boot space, roof rails, front fog lights and probably some other stuff I've forgotten.
Good stuff
It has all the old MOTs and loads of service history. The previous owner is a technician at Audi Macclesfield, so knew his stuff and maintained the car himself, at Audi, with Audi parts. He replaced the turbo not long before I bought it with what he said is a bigger turbo, although this is the one thing that wasn't a genuine part. His plan was then to re-map it, but as his wife used it more than him, he never bothered. So there is great potential for a bit more performance here. It certainly pulls well as it is, with a pronounced turbo whine which is most enjoyable. It's actually fairly rapid if you want to press on!
I fitted a new coolant temp sensor recently, and used a genuine part, not a cheap GSF/Euro one that'll fail again. All the window runners have been lubricated with silicone so they work nice and smoothly. The tyres have loads of life, Michelin on the rear and budget on the front.
It's extremely practical (the boot is vast!) especially as a family hauler, and very comfortable on long journeys. The fuel economy isn't bad either - I get 33mpg average, driven sensibly (but not like a granny) and with a mixture of roads. It'll do 40mpg on a long motorway run.
It has just been serviced and had the engine flushed at the same time.
Bad stuff
The engine light came on not long after I bought it. It has been back to the previous owner, my local VW garage and my local independent garage, and nobody can figure it out. A couple of hoses were replaced but to no avail. Two possibilities my mechanic suggested were using regular fuel instead of high octane, or simply that the bigger turbo is causing confusion. I've just learned to live with it now as it runs beautifully and clearly isn't suffering from anything significant!
Also the ABS light is on most of the time. I've had it diagnosed and it simply needs the controller module on the side of the pump repairing or replacing. I have been meaning to do this, but with my boy being very poorly recently, and another child on the way, I just don't have the time. I can supply information on where to repair it (costs £100) and how to remove and replace the unit.
The front bumper got stuck on a kerb and when I reversed the car it pulled it off. I've secured it with zip ties but it looks pants. Again, if I had the time I'd throw another one on there but hey!
There's a loose heat shield underneath which makes a bit of a vibrating sound on start up and low speed manoevring. The music easily drowns it out so it doesn't bother me.
One of the rear door locks has failed (typical Golf/Passat/Audi problem) so I've just disconnected it so it has to be manually locked and unlocked. More of an inconvenience than a problem.
The drivers side door mirror is cracked. Not badly, not enough to make me change it but worth mentioning.
Price-wise I'm looking for £550 o.n.o.
I've been totally honest about all the problems with this car and have priced it suitably cheap to reflect this. If I had the time I'd fix all these faults and be asking twice as much for it, but as it stands it's a good, honest car with a few faults that are cheap/easy fixes over a few weekends. Ideal for someone who wants a big comfy parts hauler-come-van, or even just to lift the engine out to put in something cool!
