People ask me what the best car I've ever owned is, and I always tell them about my old k plate 405 diesel estate(that includes all the m3's going inc the e30, 8 series bmws, alpinas, m5's and a couple of cowsworths). I bloody loved that old Peugeot and did more miles in that thing than any other car I've owned so I guess there is some bias there. I loved the combination of lightness(under 1200kg iirc), punchy xud engine, excellent handling/steering, and of course the practicality and mpg. I will forever hold a candle for them I would love to have a go in this one though. The sleeper aspect just adds to the occasion. Wow thats quite a selection and high praise indeed. the old diesels are also a personal favourite of mine. i bought my 1.9tdi for £300 notes as i was skint, thanks to an 850 estate that kicked me in the balls and stole all my money!!! the diesel clearly had some horrific accident in its past as the front right was many shades of red and none of the panels really lined up but i did 50K init before circumstance dictated a change. A friend of mine is running one and as i mentioned hes in the process of tweaking it here and there. me and my mate went everywhere in my diesel most of the time to collect ebay purchases which have help create a rather useful tool kit (mobile garage) Again where about's are you? i'll let you know when i'm at santapod and would gladly take you down the strip. Max I to used mine alot for ebay purchases. Many a time the load space was filled to the ceiling with car parts(mainly wheels), and it was the perfect car for the job. I think my biggest trip was from bristol to cambrige via swindon and central london. Only 90bhp but the 150ft/lbs give them a nice turn of pace around town. I will own another at some point, along with another renault 21 turbo but thats another story. I'm based in bristol, but deffo will be at santa pod this year!

Brilliant project.
Aside from the Gutmann Break Caravan I'd wondered why no-one else had thought to do this. I'd love to know the forum 'experts' that told you it couldn't be done. The Mi's part of the XU family, so why wouldn't it fit under the bonnet of another XU engined Peugeot? You'd have some difficulties with the electrics and extra fuel lines if the recipient car ran a carburettor, but other than sorting the brakes and suspension out, it's not outside the realms of possibility.
What made you go for the later 1998cc engine - availability?
Weirdly, I have the direct predecessor of your car, and it'll be getting a 1905 slotted in as soon as my finances pick up again.

Thanks very much, The Gutmann id seen pictures of but id never seen on. I have no idea why they said what they did but i did it The later engine was chosen as i had an original Mi16 which i got for £150 + 1 knackered Volvo, the auto box died. The mi16 was a little steep to run but i knew if i didnt get one then i would never have got one. Ive never really been a massive fan of wet liner engines its just got a hint of k series so the solid steel blocks make more sense to me. Ive worked on the earlier 1.9 and been driven around in a pretty mint example of one. i just never really understood why they were more sought after and the poor old 2.0's were shunned. I guess they were just lighter and made more sense for the 205 massive. have you got any pictures or yours? sounds like your mid project at the moment?

I love these old Pug wagons and this one looks like the perfect combination of all the right bits! I have an old 306 wagon that is literally just used to take our pack of hounds out on walks and it is as rough as a hedgehogs 'arris but it still goes like poop off a greased shovel and it just refuses to die (even though it sounds, looks and smells like death itself)...! I'm surprised Peugeot didn't think to create more potent wagons 'off the shelf' back in the day to rival the Sierra Ghia 4x4 and such like... It could've pre-empted the hot-wagon thing that everyone seems to be obsessed by nowadays! yeah the old bus doesnt seem to want to die....bits fall off but i guess that just makes it faster! the picture at santapod was me against a kid who had spent 7K in engine bits for an already expensive little hot hatch. it too had a 2l 16v engine but couldn't really shake the car we refer to smokey. why smokey ive forgotten but i think i was watching smokey and the bandit at the time and thought it sounded cool! Peugeot definitely missed a trick, I had mentioned a the idea of doing a mi16 estate on a form and received a very negative response about the idea. it couldn't be done, why would you do that etc etc. which kinda sealed the deal on what was\is my first top to bottom project. sure ive fiddled with cars before but this was totally different and to my knowledge the only one. should have called it tigger! i've only really had estates i cant really justify not having one. If i ever got hold of one i would have liked to try the lynx gti6 supercharged swap or a t16 both with the 4wd setup. neither of these seem likely to happen. what wagon have you got? My 306 wagon is a cooking and crumbly 1.6i LX... It just has so much poke it's pretty laughable! Those front wheels just spin and spin if you want them to...!!!!!!!!!!!
