unbelievable. I was literally just thinking about this sort of thing this morning, due to the cheapness and sleeperness of a 405 and the availability of MI16's. does it suprise many folk?

it does indeed, its been hiding in plain sight for many years now. Ive just become a little disinterested in the project and thought what better place to rekindle my interest by sharing it with the world.
i had it last dyno'd at 174bhp but it had a cracked valve. ive since rebuilt and gas flowed the head. its also had a massive rebuild suspension brakes new tyres all round.
we took it to santa pod in june 2013 and we were racing next to a fiesta st and i was only 1.2 secs of the pace. (i had a full tank and i was two up) it ran a 1/4 mile in 17 secs.
The project only came about as i had an mi16 saloon years ago and the body was shot. so i saved the engine for another day. whilst scouring the free ads i found this shell and decided id set to work. it was probably the eaisiest swap ive ever done. if i was todo it all over again i would suggest starting with a diesel shell as the mounts will line up with the factory mi16 but ive been running the gti ones for years and its been fine. the scorpion exhuast cat back from the saloon was a bolt up job too. the loom as just plugged straight into the factory loom as did the interior clusters. it really was that simple. diesel calipers drilled and grooved mtec discs and greenstuff pads and mi16 alloys with toyo t1r's
its not slow either it will keep up with type r's and the other usual suspects. its also good on fuel too 32-34 mpg considering how i drive it.
i think the build originally all in was less than 1k.

Absolutely fantastic mate! Love it, I've always thought a the 406 V6 would go nicely into a 405.

I started collecting parts to-do a v6 swap but never really happened. the mi16 was too much fun. its still nippy today. handles well also. the paint lacquer has started to peel but it just adds to fun. my mrs is rather protective of it and wont let me sell it not that id have a clue how much its worth. ive always wanted to stick a supercharger or maybe rear mount a turbo but again all pipe dreams. at the moment its a hard enough chore to keep up with maintenance. ive also got a fleet (5) of J cars which require hardly anything other than oil and filters every 6k. my garage and every spare room in the house has parts or bits for the peugeot. most of them geniune bits. a bit more info on the car the shell of the 405 had covered 106K the engine was 160K mi16 but the engine was in rude health and i had zero history on it. the remainder of the parts came from my 180K diesel 405. majority of the work ive done myself excluding the machine work on the head (didnt have the tools todo it!!) even refurbed the wheels by hand using sand paper whilst watching telly! i would give it a go and start building one as the ebay prices for them are through the floor at the moment. you could end up with pretty rapid car for not alot of cash if you were to go with a v6 the build could be less than £750 i reckon. ive spoken with some french nutters who built a 1.9 turbo (406 sri) powered estate and that looked pretty rapid. a mate of mine is currently playing with his 1.9tdi 405 and that feels pretty nippy not a patch on the mi16 but ho hum. if anyone is brave enough ive got a spare scorpion exhaust that i'll donate to the cause. about the ax with the vts, one guy had done it and turbo'd one and it was pushing out 400+bhp. very quick but i like my estates. you could but that ax for very little but i havent seen any decent 3 doors in years a pair of them ax gts used to do the rounds in reading about an inch of the ground but the mi16 used to blast past them.

I think the conversion would hell of lot easier in a 405 than 205/309. Never know, the drive shafts might even fit without welding.

Nice conversion you have made yourself there, something that peugeot should have done from the factory. What interior have you got, the leather ones are very comfy!

The interior was originally the GLX trim with what i refer to as the ball breaker seats. not quite bucket seats and not quite comfy seats. i binned the fronts and replaced them with my mi16 ph2 seats. ran it with those and it really finished the conversion off. My other halfs 405 diesel was written off so as a tribute to her late motor we swapped out the super comfy seats front and rear which has now transformed the car. it has a center arm rest and the door trims are also black which help. the steering wheel was also swapped from airbag to a mi16 steering wheel. i never owned a leather seated 405 as i've had 5 of them over the years.
the front headlights were changed from the auto adjuster ones to the mk1 h4 manual adjuster ones and fitted the hid kit i bought 5 years ago. i removed the front grill badge which was probably the most difficult part of the whole conversion.
the car itself runs diesel front struts and springs which gives its massive ground clearance. which is handy as ill be fitting some 16 wheels at some point and run some bf goodrich tyres which the mrs doesnt like on her subaru outback. ill keep the toyos for santapod \ track days.
the engine as i mentioned earlier has had a bit of work done to the head. ive also painted the head and colour coded bits of the engine to car with a black silver and red theme (same colour as the car) no idea why i did it just thought id like something pretty for once. the hoses are all silicone as i cant be bothered trying to source peugeot ones. and the whole world only seems to like the 1.9mi16 rather than the 2.0 mi16 so parts for it are few and far between. the avac still works but if it plays up ill bin it for a gti6 manifold. ive fitted a gates timing belt also as it doesnt get any better than that in my opinion.
the radiator was swapped for a diesel one along with the diesel slam panel with the twin fans. the wiring loom for that went in the bin as it never worked. so i have a manual switch for single or twin fans. i may use the thermistor sensor on the rad for auto fan as sometimes the temp creeps up when your not expecting it.

That looks cool!
I am in the process of doing a 405 V6 and will try and get a thread up soon. I have done a few 205 V6's so shouldn't be too hard!

I love these old Pug wagons and this one looks like the perfect combination of all the right bits!
I have an old 306 wagon that is literally just used to take our pack of hounds out on walks and it is as rough as a hedgehogs 'arris but it still goes like poop off a greased shovel and it just refuses to die (even though it sounds, looks and smells like death itself)...!
I'm surprised Peugeot didn't think to create more potent wagons 'off the shelf' back in the day to rival the Sierra Ghia 4x4 and such like... It could've pre-empted the hot-wagon thing that everyone seems to be obsessed by nowadays!

People ask me what the best car I've ever owned is, and I always tell them about my old k plate 405 diesel estate(that includes all the m3's going inc the e30, 8 series bmws, alpinas, m5's and a couple of cowsworths). I bloody loved that old Peugeot and did more miles in that thing than any other car I've owned so I guess there is some bias there. I loved the combination of lightness(under 1200kg iirc), punchy xud engine, excellent handling/steering, and of course the practicality and mpg. I will forever hold a candle for them I would love to have a go in this one though. The sleeper aspect just adds to the occasion.

It could've pre-empted the hot-wagon thing that everyone seems to be obsessed by nowadays! yeah the old bus doesnt seem to want to die....bits fall off but i guess that just makes it faster! the picture at santapod was me against a kid who had spent 7K in engine bits for an already expensive little hot hatch. it too had a 2l 16v engine but couldn't really shake the car we refer to smokey. why smokey ive forgotten but i think i was watching smokey and the bandit at the time and thought it sounded cool! Peugeot definitely missed a trick, I had mentioned a the idea of doing a mi16 estate on a form and received a very negative response about the idea. it couldn't be done, why would you do that etc etc. which kinda sealed the deal on what was\is my first top to bottom project. sure ive fiddled with cars before but this was totally different and to my knowledge the only one. should have called it tigger! i've only really had estates i cant really justify not having one. If i ever got hold of one i would have liked to try the lynx gti6 supercharged swap or a t16 both with the 4wd setup. neither of these seem likely to happen. what wagon have you got?

Wow thats quite a selection and high praise indeed. the old diesels are also a personal favourite of mine. i bought my 1.9tdi for £300 notes as i was skint, thanks to an 850 estate that kicked me in the balls and stole all my money!!! the diesel clearly had some horrific accident in its past as the front right was many shades of red and none of the panels really lined up but i did 50K init before circumstance dictated a change. A friend of mine is running one and as i mentioned hes in the process of tweaking it here and there. me and my mate went everywhere in my diesel most of the time to collect ebay purchases which have help create a rather useful tool kit (mobile garage) Again where about's are you? i'll let you know when i'm at santapod and would gladly take you down the strip. Here's something I saw in Switzerland back in the early nineties. - I've posted on here about it before. Gutmann made an "Mi16 break" (I still have the Autocar magazine that a UK version was featured in) IMG_2302 by simes205, on Flickr estate by simes205, on Flickr

that is exactly the car I was thinking of when I saw you had posted Simes ! they are a brilliant chassis and a real shame most only see them as engine donors, most are easily under 1150 kg, the lightest ones being under a ton even.
