Ok, as some of you are aware over 4 years I built up my herald rotary RR award winning and the MX5 supercharged herald. what a wonderful car, however with the chosen look of the car and my expanding family it was no longer able to move the required quantity of people with stuff to anywhere, no fun days out for me. So it was sold on. . . I know the current owner and he's having great fun on track / road with it now. I then brought that Taunus 20M coupe, on impulse tbh, it was so rotten it was beyond my equipment so it went off for work and after alot of money it's still in no better shape and still miles off the road. I've become so unintrested in it it's sat now from august having done nothing to try and progress it, I'm even thinking of letting it go now because its been such a nightmare and financial drain and starting over from scratch. I was looking at another herald, 3cyl turbo and not quite as low so to keep its ability to have everything loaded into it. then I found this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/rover-sd1-unfinished-wide-arch-project-/321252813286?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4acc28e9e6Now I have a 323i which I brought some time back to do a body swap on the Taunus with so have them both sat about. I'm wondering if to encourage myself somehow to build the Taunus or cut the strings start over with a naughty SD1 323i to keep me in the retro game. Thoughts and suggestions, Thanks for your help and inspiration.

SD1's are ace, and you can move house with one when the rear seats are folded down. Novel idea with the engine swap - me and my brother were trying to pull off a Toyota 7M-GTE into an SD1 (before he got rid of the car). It went in no problem as there's quite a bit of room in the engine bay.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me and a bit of a project mojo boost might do the trick for you. Certainly be different and you'll get extra points for keeping the bodykit currently fitted to that rolling shell.

Anywhere you can fit a Rover V8 you can fit an LS1...

I always fancied a jaguar AJ6 4.0 inline six in an SD1 for some reason. Love that one on ebay, have a massive turbo V8 that would go in it as well, if you are going to bid on it I will leave it alone, don't want to drive the price up.

The story is they had to detune the 2.6 as it was more powerful than the V8 ! I had an early V8 and wonderful car. Mate borrowed it and ripped the exhaust off so it became a donor for my MGB GT. Searched for another SD1 but good ones getting rare.

Due to its age - I'd want a GOOD look around the car for potential rot covered up by the bodykit. The bonnet bulge hardly looks like a quality job, so I'd be cautious about the comment of "wheels made to fit archs and is very wide" - could be some horrendous spacers: www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/wheel-spacers/grayston-universal-wheel-spacer-kitBut... Fit a relatively sensible engine (ie: reliable, reasonable mpg, cheap parts) and it could be a pretty awesome family daily! I'm still an advocate of using the Citroen/Pug XUD diesel family. Cheap as chips to repair, really quite easy to make rwd (LDV Pilot gearbox) propshaft should even bolt straight up, 40mpg whilst lugging around a boot full of lead up hills - and it's pretty easy to get 180Bhp!

Sorry but that would be a crime, they came with a 6pot so engine bay length wouldn't be an issue, drop an OM606 in and go chasing 400bhp If that's not enough, surely a 6BTA could be squeezed in with a slightly bigger bonnet bulge

at over 400kg a lump, I think a 6BT would break the suspension at the slightest glance!
Good for a fun car, that doesn't have to even go round a corner - not very practical for a daily driver + family car however
