When I got my cortina it had no seatbelts fitted, I put in a set of Securons but the passenger side bolt seems to have cross threaded, it just turns and doesn't thread in or out any further. It is in solidly and doesn't move at all other than rotating. I will need to get it out as I have the MOT coming up in the new year. I have tried just turning with a socket but no joy, there's no resistance or slipping feeling, it just turns as if it were going into/out of a thread. I have a set of stud extractors but I'm wary of cutting it off as it does actually hold the seatbelt solidly. I also want to avoid knackering the thread on the sill as it's a recent replacement., although I don't mind recapping for a slightly larger UNF bolt.
Any tips folks. Cheers in advance.

Sounds like the captive nut in the sill has come loose.

can you get a pry bar/screwdriver under the head of the bolt whilst turning it? I have used this method to remove bolts from worn holes in which the bolt just spins. Often it is enough to get the thread of the bolt to catch enough to get the bolt out

as Jon said, cutting the head off will only make matters worse I think.

The captive nut is loose. Only option is to cut out around it and reattach it, then weld it back on.

If it's a Mk3/4 or 5 the captive nut is not accessable (inside the inner sill) to cut it with the seatbelt inplace is even more difficult and wiil need that side of the car stripping to get the carpet out thew way ect, or if you try it there is a fair bit of inner sill to cut and the B pillar You could cut the head of the bolt off and fit a nut to whats left BUT the seatbelt bolts have a very fine thread and finding a nut to fit wont be easypeasy, try the levering method first see how it goes but if the nut is spinning your only option may well be cut the bolt head off, remove the seatbelt, drill 2 small holes in the inner sill where the nut is and weld through the sill to the nut to resecure it and wind the bolt out using molegrips.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like consensus is that the nut is loose. It's a mk3 so it looks like welding is the only option, unfortunately that's a bit beyond my skills. I need a couple of other small repairs done so I'll have to find a tame welder and get done work done.

I'm pretty sure there is a 'standard' for seat belt fixings - 7/16" UNF. I know it is that size on a wide variety of European, J and UK cars from E reg (whatever year that is - 1989?) through to present day. Nuts can be had at any half decent fasteners supplier.
