I just haven't bothered looking at it for the past month or so because I've been so disenchanted with the car, but I've had a little play today and wondered if anyone could give me their opinion on my findings.
Embarrassingly I have to admit that I was wrong and that the filter housing is not the issue (or maybe it was "an" issue and I fixed it, but that's wishful thinking...). I put in a clear piece of pipe straight off the filter housing and there are no bubbles coming from there any more, so I started putting clear pipe in where I could after the filter.
Hopefully you can see in the pictures below that there is air in the injector leak-off pipe between cylinders 1 and 2, there is air in the leak off pipe coming from cylinder 4 to the round cylinder junction thing that has four pipes going in to/out of it. Then there is also air going from that round junction thing to the metal fitting on top of the pump, which I assume has something to do with sending the excess fuel back to the fuel tank.
Does this mean the air is getting in somewhere between the fuel filter and the injectors? What do you lot reckon, seen anything like this before?
