I'm going to stick a battery cut-off switch into my Escort track car. I'm just wondering if it is ok to do that on the negative side of the battery. Its the short cable in the photo below. Its just in a better position to reach it from the drivers seat while strapped in.

If its for track regs it needs to cut off the engine so would need to be an FIA cut off switch in the + side. If its just for security or to stop battery drain - side is fine.

If you have the switch by the battery, and turn it off before you turn off the engine, you can toast you alternator as its not quick enough to sense the lack of load and blows the diodes, FIA type switches I believe have a small bypass within them to avoid this.

Atmo V8 Power . No slicks , No gas + No bits missing . Doing it in style. Austin A35van, very different------- but still doing it in style, going to be a funmoble

Thanks for the replies guys. Eventually I was going to hook it up to a pull cord outside the car, so I might have to go back and have a look at my switch, cause I don't think its an FIA one, it was good and cheap I should do it right the first time so I don't have to re-do the job later on.

Is it just me who finds it odd to see a battery laying flat on its side?

It is pretty unusual to see them on their side, with most batteries it'd be a very bad idea, and a sure-fire way to get acid everywhere, however little race batteries like that are the gel type and can be used any way up. (They're also found in mobility scooters, if you don't want to pay race-car-parts tax)
