Are Aeroscreens road legal?
I've recently had a little mishap in my metro and the roof has shall we say 'seen better days'. Car drives fine btw.
For a laugh I was thinking about chopping the roof and making a aeroscreen (leaving 4-6" of A pillar then using a bit of the roof for the aeroscreen) just to bob around in untill the MOT runs out in june.
I will no doubt be stopped by the po lice so where do i stand legally?

yes. perfectly legal.
If they are smaller than a certain size you don't need wipers or washers either.

it will be in SVA, "Construction & Use of Motor Vehicles" or Road Traffic Act. I don't know the answer myself.

It shouldn't need an SVA surely?
The old MOT rule is that it only needs wipers if you can't see over it!

Are you adding bracing to stop it being really, really, floppy? If it's just for a summer run around you could triangulate over the back seats, weld a thin steel plate over the top and have a snazzy little 2 seater metro.

would the roof chop need an SVA? I'm considering a chop, and reinforcements, reckon i may need an SVA, or more a case of an ngineer checking it over and giving me a certificate?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

the screen doesn;t need SVA but SVA regs will state what the legal requirements are for the screen. Remember you can pass an MOT and still have an illegal / unroadworthy car...
As for the roof chop. God knows. I'd say no but the "points" are for an original unmodified monocoque...

The old MOT rule is that it only needs wipers if you can't see over it! I think an opening screen doesn't need them either

I don't intend to SVA it, but I'd like to know what is legal and what isn't. The car has a full cage as it is, if it's a bit wobberly still then I'll brace the shell (or whats left of it) to that. Ideally I don't want to spend any money on it as that why it's not getting a new roof or reshell (I have no cash), I do however want to hear the K series scream at least a few more times before the cars broken for bits.

just close the doors and weld angle iron all the way along the top in side so it carries on over the rear quarters, thats how we did our hillman imp years ago and it never felt at all bendy, no doors was funny with girls in skirts as well, especially when they had to push start it and leap in over the back. you don't need wipers on a screen you can see over thats why you don't get wipers on bike fairings.

no photos I'm afraid, car was already on its last legs and we had a really hot summer so the roof came off, me and me mate happened to be knocking off two good looking leggy blondes so was a cracking summer.
As it happens i have to admit the imp looked REALLY good as an open top car, would like to see one done properly, it made it look longer and lower, the proportions worked really well.

Found an online copy of the SVA 2004 in pdf format. ;D In there it states everything people have already said (top marks chaps!) ie small aeroscreen/windshield or a fully opening windscreen. It even gives a diagram for calculating where the 'horizontal plane' is (the bit that needs wipers etc) if the screen is below that no wipers are needed. My next question is . . . has anyone got a blueprint for a Rover Metro / 100??? Looks likea right game to actualy measure it in an actual car! A sunny weekend is all thats needed now me thinks!
