So, it looks like I'm about to sell my E30 convertible (2.8 24v engine plus loads of goodies) and I need to find another retro toy to replace it. I've always liked the look of the 944 and think I may want to scratch the itch. I quite fancy a late turbo or S2 3.0. The thing is, I know very little about them - is the turbo better than a 3.0 n/a? What are the must-haves I should be looking out for? I've followed a couple of builds on here, especially sumpcrackers, but need much more info before I go off and buy something!
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.....

Go one then - I will have a go. Late turbos are getting expensive now. They can be quite a complex beast and need cam belts and balance belts, rollers and tensioners changed when needed. They are desirable as they are easily tune able and getting very rare. The S2 is more of a GT car in comparison - I liked the kick of the turbo, but enjoyed my 968 (same engine minus the variocam) that the 944 s2 has. You will be able to buy a newer 944 s2 than a turbo and the s2 can be used as a daily car. When buying the first and foremost thing to remember is look for accident damage and rust in the sills, bottoms of arches etc. Loads of these are getting scrapped as they are rusty and to cut out, repair and paint can be £1500 per side. Great cars in whichever guise you go for one. Everyone should own one at least once. Clarks garage will be your greatest resource if you get on (buy me a beer later) www.clarks-garage.com/

I've had 2 of them 1st one was a white non turbo one,it had just had a £3000 service before I bought it! The car was 5500! As mentioned make sure the cam and balance belts have been done I looked at one that had about 1cm of filler around the base of the window/door shut area due to bodged accident damage repair The 2nd was a 220bhp turbo model, changed to 250 later models ,,much better , fast , smooth 70 mph feels like 40 I had 160 out of mine (err track day of course ) not 5am Xmas morning I test drove a s2 as well still fast and smooth but I prefer the kick from the turbo I think the turbo was 9k from a dealer, pre mortgage days of course,! Sold it 2 years later for £200 less

Thanks for the replies and especially the links. I can go to look at potential purchases with my eyes very much open. I still can't decide between a turbo or S2, so will drive a couple of each to see which feels right to me.

As Rav has said look for rot, especially in the sills and rear axle mounts, there are a few repair panels but it works out very expensive. I've had two one was fine, one I pulled apart and couldn't believe how rotten it was so I parted it out on ebay.
