I've got a load of cast alu engine bits to weigh in for scrap - what's the best way to do this? Do the bits have to be cleaned / totally stripped? Do they take stuff like complete gearboxes and stuff?

You are better off giving your local scrapper a call (You will have to take it to them) - failing that ask on a local building site who "looks after there waste metal" they will point you to the nearest traveller who will probs give you a good price. BE CAREFULL THOUGH.

Be wary about getting travellers come round to pick it up, if they see other tat knocking about it will almost certainly go missing shortly afterwards. Take it to them if you can.

Thanks chaps. There are metal recycling places advertising in the Yellow Pages - I was gonna take it round there to get it weighed. Just testing the water first in case it's actually only worth about 27p and not worth bothering with. There's a fair old amount though. Don't think I like the idea of getting Diddies round my gaff

Only advice I can give is make sure it's not mixed metal
Alu = £/kg
Steel = £0.00000000001/kg
If you have steel mixed with the ally they give you mixed rate which trust me is a lot closer to steel than ally
Got about 125 kgs to weigh in at the moment but it's 95% ally (5% steel ferules pipes/brackets) so untill it's all ally it's not gonna be weighed in

Most of it is stripped, but the cylinder heads still have the tappets in, as they seem to be torqued to about 592,000Nm. Balderdash. I could do with just getting rid to be honest, but if there's a bit of beer money to be made... ;D

Got to that place in Ilkeston, forget what it's called but it sounds a bit like a magicians name, begins with Z. I weighed in a load of old alloy wheels there, they don't mess you about and it's only up the road

Any bits of steel you cant get out smash with a sledgehammer. Before you take it in phone up for the rate first though, it goes up and down alot! I weighed in 12 alloy wheels and got £1.80 each. I was expecting up to £10. You can make quite a bit of money weighing in non-ferrous scrap. Copper pipes, old copper boilers and scrap lead are a good money spinner. Save up bits and pieces you have lying about and when you have a pile wiegh it in

just as a guide, alloy wheels make more than any other alloy scrap. and it seriously pays to ring round if you can. places can vary wildy. not sure what shells are making but, alloy wheels last month I think were making £700 a tonne*, cats are making £36 each this week. copper was making £3000 a tonne last month. bmws were making £50 each ;D if you can smash the steel out it'll help loads in value. if you can't try getting it weighed as irony-ally, better price than regular mixed round these parts.
*price from EMR in cambridge, colchester was only paying £500 a tonne. told you it varies wildly.
