So being as it was nice weather again today, i finaly got round to replacing the knackerd rear shocks on my beetle. Hopefully it'll stop the exhaust scrapping on the floor every time i give it some beans. Anyway did both sides with no problems in about 45mins, however when i was doing up the last wheel nut, all of a sudden, twang, the threads gone all loose. Yes ancient drums = kippered thread. No worries i thought i'll pop down to GSF to get a new drum in my 5 Turbo. So walk to lock up down the were it's kept start it up, warm it up etc before driving off. curse word traffic everywhere, so when i do get the chance to put my foot down on a dual carriageway i do. Going past something, boost comes on and i hear what sounds like gravel hitting the inner arch. It's not until i use the boost again that i notice it is now doing the same gravely noise, but only in 3rd, 4th and 5th. It is also hesitant and very lumpy at idle, and in first it wants to Kangaroo all the time. Drove home without using the turbo. When i open the bonnet there is a loud hissing, like air escaping from somewhere, but can't quite fathom out where it's coming from. So any ideas? Could it be my turbo bearing going, or something more horrific? Bloody French cars

Could the turbo pipe have come off the turbo?

my mates 200 popped a pipe on its cooler in front of me as he toed it crossing a junction, made me laugh, he was shittin himself though as he crawled across the bypass doing 5mph. lots of black smoke aswell.
now i think of it, happened another time as i was coming past in my mr2, he booted it out of budgens in front of me and it popped again. oh how i laughed (again). again black smoke
no offence but gravelly sound don't sound too good in any engine diagnosis. you might get lucky though with a boost pipe.
if you break it ill take the carb and turbo. ahem. lol.

Cool , guys will have to check that out.
One other quick Q, without sounding like a tw at, if the turbo pipe has come disconected, would that still make it idle badly?
I was under the impression the turbo only works at higher revs?

It would make it idle badly is it is getting more / less air than it usually would (not sure which, but it sounds about right).

Check the turbo for play in the shaft, both back and forth and side to side?
I got a similar gravelly sound in my 480 turbo turned out to be....... a cambelt pulley had exploded and the gravelly noise was the cambelt slapping the cover!!!!!!! luckly the belt did not snap or jump any teeth dispite me driving for 6 miles like it. Lucky escape i guess
