Conforming is the opposite of growing up.
Explain stuff to the kids, they'll be needing and wanting that; some people are given little respect in their lives, and not taught any, so they behave accordingly. etc. And maybe find somewhere else to keep the car too, if poss.

stick to who you are when I were at school I got bullied for not wearing the latest fashions or for sitting reading car books or manuals instead of going on about football but now weve grown up they're the ones coming to me when their car breaks cos they don't know what to do . I did once say to people I was going to be like everybody else because I was fed up but my friends turned round and said don't change you are who you are and it made me feel a whole lot better

As many others have said, be who you are! I had many people laugh at me for driving an estate at the age of 17, then i bought another at 18, an then another at the age of 19. I sold my last estate 5 months ago, but i want another already. Ill be 20 in April, so maybe ill have another then once my insurance comes down. All my cars have been different to the normal finance ridden Corsa's and Fiesta's everyone else my age seems to have. My Seat Cordoba 1.9tdi i owned at the age of 17 (my second car) An then my Passat tdi, which i have owned twice Most people also didn't understand why i lowered my "family car" The Passat had half inch clearance, and would regularly leave me stuck on roads a little camber!

Who actually says "curse word" in any case?

This is a great communitythe thing that puts me off posting here more is the ridiculous prudish censorship. Who actually says "curse word" in any case? The thing that has put me off countless other forums is the complete lack of moderation or self control. If you need to use curse words to express yourself you clearly need to garner a better grasp of the English language, which by the way is the most variable, descriptive and fluid language in the world. Well, I don't intend my comments to be taken as a criticism of this forum. As I said, it's a great forum with some great contributors. For your part, were you criticising my grasp of the English language? If you knew me personally you'd know that I spend much of my life studying the English language. My specialism is the work of Chaucer and his contemporaries, which is probably why I'm so fond of the Anglo-Saxon language that is dismissed as "curse words" by some people nowadays. I genuinely find it sad that some of the most expressive vocabulary has become so maligned, because I don't really understand why. These words really weren't that rude in those days. Anyway, the relevance to this thread is that it's about the right to express your individuality. On this forum, we're great at defending your right to express yourself via the car that you drive, and probably also your clothes etc. All I wanted to say is that as a scholar of the English language I also value the freedom of expression via the choice of vocabulary. It's not a big deal though and I mean no disrespect to Retro Rides. There's no reason to mention it again now that I've made my point. To the OP I would just say, as others have done: you carry on and be yourself in whatever way you feel appropriate, because in the end if we're afraid to be different things get very boring, very quickly. Good for you

i say screw it they will only find something else to pick about eg hair colour, weight etc so the "your dad rides a curse word bike" is a little less personal
i remember in the late 90s a mate at school used to get dropped off in a lovely white with tobacco vinyl roof t reg mk1 fiesta, some of the lads used to try and pick on him because his dad had an old car, the problem was some of their parents didnt even drive so i used to point that out whenever i heard them.

Would be difficult Bob as it's behind my house (with the park in between) and only costs £20 a month to rent it from the council so it's a bit of a bargain.

I genuinely find it sad that some of the most expressive vocabulary has become so maligned, because I don't really understand why. These words really weren't that rude in those days. Apologies if it came across that way; no, I was not referring to your use of words so much as the generic "you", i.e. someone or anyone. As regards criticisms, I did once try for a time to raise the point on another forum that went that way (dropping almost all moderation), I was not very politely told where to go and I steered clear. It has completely failed now, it still exists, but where it once had respect, bragging rights on popularity etc, enough of a reputation to actually be taken seriously in the car scene, now its a laughing stock and a home for teens of pre-driving licence age. It lost an insanely large marketing potential, and is banned from several other communities and shows. All because they started off by failing to moderate the language. Apologies to OP for the digression, I only felt it prudent to assure 'mrlivered' I was not having a pop at him.

The lack of naughty words on this forum keeps it under the radar for spam filters and the like, so I am happy to work around it!
As for the kids, that's just what kids do isn't it? No matter where you go in the world people will pick on the person that stands out and try and drag them back into the "fold". We, as humans, struggle with things that are "different" and try very hard to make others conform to what we think is right.
In regards to what you should do, well, it sounds like your daughter isn't too phased by it. If she is happy then carry on. We all learn the sting of someone being nasty to us at some point, its a lot easier to cop it when its because someone is riding an unusual bike than being given a mouthful cos you're a bit fat, or have to wear coke bottle glasses to see (grown out of both, but the memory is still there)
