As a wise man once said, 'Why Grow Up?' *cough*My dad drove around in Wolseleys, Auntie Rovers, a variety of Minis and numerous other random undesirables whilst I was at school. I got teased relentlessly for being poor because my dad didn't drive new cars. I thought my Dad's cars were awesome (it is why you are all on this here blue oasis) so it didn't bother me as much. In conclusion kids are cruel. As for what you should do, I dunno, don't want to show that bowing to bullying is a reasonable thing, but at the same time you don't want upset kids.

You don't have to change yourself and these childish idiots are just that. The only problem is that I know if it had been me in your situation I would have got a different bike just to save my daughter from the distress it caused her. Not because of my feelings but for her as I would still rock the old folder when I fancied and there probably was some of those kids thinking its cool.
If it was me I would buy a cheap used bmx with an old school style and fit the wheels and 3 speed shifter. Its an easy job (I have done it many times in my youth) so you can ride something retro style but a bmx will always cross the generation gap.

Thanks for all the input folks, it's great to get so many opinions and points of view, it's made me feel a lot better, you guys are the tops. I have had a chat with my daughter and she is fine and says she wants a Tomahawk of her own (in pink) so all looks good on that front. On the other hand I do have a mountain bike but it's not been ridden for about twelve years so when I'm on bike rides with the kids I can use that and maybe leave the clunkers at home. ( Or I could wait until late at night, dress as Batman and tear around the village on my black Raleigh Chopper ).

In answer to what your daughter asked, ' whether you knew they were laughing at you'. Just tell her yes you did, and that they haven't been the first, and probably won't be the last, and explain more importantly that its not something you worry about.I agree as someone said earlier, there will always be those who 'notice' people who are 'different' and it makes therm feel 'big' to laugh/shout abuse etc. I used to get comments about my old landy,(I live in a small close, you know a 'wash the car every sunday, new car every 3 yrs type affairs) That was until we had a bad winter ........ every ones best friend then .... go figure. Being over 6 ft and around 20 stone helps ......

Typical horrid little scrotes with nothing better to do.
If it hadn't been the bike it woulda been something else - your clothes, hair cut, beard....whatever.
F---- em!
At least if they were taking the pee outta you, they didn't get a chance to pick on your kids, so you did a good & selfless thing! ;-)

Some kids are just unpleasant. What is more of a shock is when you meet their parents and they are exactly the same. My kids are still quite young and they just think it's normal to ride ride in weird old cars (unless we're in Mum's Touran of course). However, I have even had the local young scallies mocking when I have been driving the vehicle that launched a thousand kid's t shirts, our Vdub split bus.

By the way, I do also agree with the previous poster who says you shouldn't be over the top 'individual' for the sake of your kids.

Be proud to be you sir Ive had countless negative and abusive shouts aimed at me since I was a kid I have since I can remember dressed like Compo, Para Boots, fatigues, scruffy t shirt wooly hat. And hair like James May dragged through a bush. You change to please the Neanderthals of the world you are not you anymore and yes my Niece hated me picking her up from school in my various bangers, but shes 23 now and now we laugh about my Camaro chucking black smoke over her friends etc.. these things create fond memories when they get older things they would never remember if you changed and picked them up in a nice shiny eurobox Be proud to be different, this is what makes the world interesting be a curse word world if everyone followed corporate fashion

10 years ago, my daughter (then 14) hated and refused to ride in my 84 Olds Custom Cruiser station wagon (complete with fake wood) and now has a brand (bland) new Corsa. My son, on the other hand loved the Olds and now drives a slammed 72 Triumph 2000. theres a lesson here somewhere!

Just ignore them if its not upsetting your kids too much, they'de only want to nick a mountain bike if you were on it to ride home and dump anyway. If it wasn't the bike they were laughing at it would be something else as said previously....

I'm a teenager and even I don't like teenagers...
I've seen a couple of times some posh boys being picked up from some out of town posh school in a morris minor traveller and a patina'ed mk3 cortina looking bored and embarrassed as anything but I love them and then people in new mazda 6's or mercs to be fashionable, looking snobby and I think its a waste of money, stick to being who you are and don't let anyone (especially stoopid teens) change your mind.

lol, Bu*ger is a curse word according to the site. Is it now owned by American prudes? This is a great community, the thing that puts me off posting here more is the ridiculous prudish censorship. Who actually says "curse word" in any case? Anyway, on topic, it seems pretty self-evident to me that being an individual is better than being a sheep. Kids usually understand that once it's explained, in my experience. I've recently bumped into some of the bullies that I remember from school. They're complete losers now. On the other hand the kids who were on the receiving end of curse word taking for being "different" are all pretty successful (on their own terms) nowadays. So for my own part, it makes me uncomfortable to say the least when my kids are put in the position you're referring to. But deep down I'm pretty confident they're on the right trajectory - and so are yours. Their old man is cool! Keep at it and be true to yourself

I'd tell my kids to ignore them. I'm 39, still wear t-shirts, shorts & skate shoes & can't see me changing any time soon. I love my 'rustbucket' & so do the kids, it's far cooler than mum's grey Corsa.
But do what you think is best for your situation, if you like the folder then keep it, teach yourself to wheelie it through the park.....that'll stop the hassle (just don't fall off!!!)

I've found that the older I get the less I give a curse word about what other people think of my cars/clothes/music. The sort of people that make a "hilarious" comments about such things are douches.

you sound like a good parent to me,raising your kids with good values. I wouldn't change because of what a scally said, some of the things you hear them say are simply pathetic and show how braindead they are.As long as your kids properly understand why you like older things, they will know they don't have to follow the herd and more importantly being different isn't a bad thing!

Tell it like it is everyone, I won't be told what to do by "the man"... My kids loved my old beetles and pick ups and whatevers. My eldest now cycles to work on a bmx or a chopper and my youngest skates to school on a longboard, both girls, cool girls in my humble opinion.

As a kid in the early 2000s my mum used to drop me to school in a shonky Saab 900 turbo, and then progressed to an eve-more-shonky Suzuki SJ413, and a vitara fatboy.
I didn't care, I loved those cars, and I didnt give a curse word what anyone else thought of em!

Regarding curse words, to be fair to the mods it's a good way of keeping the place open to as many as possible and not having the site blocked by various ISPs, work servers etc.

lol, Bu*ger is a curse word according to the site. Is it now owned by American prudes? This is a great communitythe thing that puts me off posting here more is the ridiculous prudish censorship. Who actually says "curse word" in any case? The thing that has put me off countless other forums is the complete lack of moderation or self control. If you need to use curse words to express yourself you clearly need to garner a better grasp of the English language, which by the way is the most variable, descriptive and fluid language in the world. As I see it, your kids should take precedence over any other decisions needing made, but at the same time you shouldn't need to make decisions based on the passing comments of some mocking youths. There is no need for anyone to call said youths anything nasty either, by the way. They may be wrong, they may lack education or social grace, but that doesn't warrant calling them degenerates or anything similar. They are scared of being ostracised by their peers and trapped in a vicious circle of social acceptance vs individualism within the bounds of normality. And we're all still playing that game - unless you live in a castle, with a dragon, 46 cars and don't pay fines, taxes, or a mortgage, in which case, you might be the exception. Everyone else is just playing the grown up version of what those kids were at. Don't change for anyone that doesn't accept you as you are, but don't let your need to be different negatively affect those close to you. Fine line, for which everyone's balancing point is unique to them.
