What do you make of this then?
I changed the clutch in my Alfa 75 last week. I fitted a low-mileage SH replacement that Jamieandthemagictorch sent me. When I dismantled the old one I found that it was worn, but not what I would call worn out. Also there was a lot of clutch dust in the housing. The new friction pate was a worthwhile bit thicker than the old one so I cleaned everything up, fitted the new friction plate and pressure plate, and boshed it all back together. I tested it and all was well, no slip, good pedal feel, engaging and disengaging OK.
Now this week I come to move it and the clutch will not disengage properly, meaning lots of crunching and carrying-on when trying to select 1st from a standstill. Fatha_bo11ox and I spend ages bleedeing and re-bleeding the clutch, but TBH the hydraulics seem to be OK anyway, the pedal feels right, there are no leaks, and we are getting a good tracvel on the clutch operating lever. So I'm flummoxed. Anyway I take it for a highly illegal blezz down to the end of the cul de sac and what do I find? Now its slipping like a mutha. You can let the clutch up from a standstill in 3rd and rev away, it just slips as if it was completely worn out. Now I am really mad.
Whats that all about then? It was fine last week. B@$T4RD$^%$##!1
Anyway I am going to dismantle the ruddy lot again tonight and see what I can find. I hope its sticking on the splines or something like that, its a long shot, but its the only thing I can think of.

Sorry to hear your bad luck. Did you use any lubricant on the splines, and if so what kind?

Youre not meant to use anything on the spines are you? Just clean them up. Could the clutch fork pivot thing be screwed somehow?

If you have MSN, add trx850uk, it is Twinspark who sometimes posts on here. He said to give him a shout as he may be able to help a little, being an ItCar nut and a fellow 75 owner.

Welll last night I went to play with it and it was engaging and disengaging OK again! Bizarre. I did not go razzing it down the street as I decided to tackle the rear brakes instead, so that I would be able to test the clutch for slip (against the handbrake).
There is a hyrdaulic hose in the clutch system, I think I am gonna replace that, maybe it is breaking down internally and stopping the fluid from flowing properly.

Youre not meant to use anything on the spines are you? Just clean them up. Could the clutch fork pivot thing be screwed somehow? "a light smear of multipurpose grease on the splines will assist" to quote my friends at Haynes (at least on VWs). Presumably installation is then the reverse of removal.

I decided to tackle the rear brakes instead, so that I would be able to test the clutch for slip (against the handbrake). good luck on the rear brakes - they are an absolute curse word to setup well - I always entrust this job to a mate of mine. Hope that the hose replacement sorts out the clutch problem.

Yeah they suck major league spaceman dong, I was on for 5 hours faffing about changing the pads with my fat trembling hands, when I had finished the brakes were still proper dog-egg. Mega spongey and that.
Handbrake is good now though. I think I need to bleed the brakes a bit more, might lob in some new front pads as well.

My old Estelle had a weird day with the clutch once. When I bought it, I replaced the master cylinder, blead it through and then all was fine until winter. I found the switch that directed heated air down the centre tunnel to the rear seat passenger and turned it on.
It wasn't that cold, but the heating made everything hot enough that the metal of the handbrake was almost too hot to touch, and the clutch got soggy really quickly pedal not springing back up, after I got stuck in traffic for 15 minutes. A couple of quick blasts and some cooling air under the car and it worked fine again. I turned off the heat diverter and it never happened again. Do 75s have anything similar to get heat to the back seats? Or as you say, any flexi pipe gone soggy and expanding. Might try and see if Pirtek can make you a short braided section with the right ends on.
