As above, I'm off to look at one at the weekend, it was originally a 1.8 GTi 16v. Do any of you have experience with a VR6 converted mk2? Common problems? It's had a recent respray in its original colour so the bodywork looks very well.
Ben.

rust is the biggest pain in the bum , id be suspicious if its had rust repairs bodged over and looks better than it is
have a really good look everywhere for rot /bad repairs
engine wise timing chain rattles will be the biggest repair , and generaly look if its been done to a good standard , is the wiring all neat and proper etc

ive just rebuilt a vr, and a garage friend hasjust rebuilt two, ifit any where near 130k, timing chains and guides. its a box off rocker cover off job, easy, but not cheap. don't do it, and if it lets go, its epic failure. bear that in mind with any vr.

Cheers guys, much appreciated.
Do mk2's suffer with any suspension issues? It's on coilovers but I'm not sure what brand.

You can't really go wrong with any coilovers on a golf, even if they pop JOM's are so cheap it doesn't really matter. And I've been running £160 JOM's for 2 years with no sign of a leak.
As for the car itself, as said rust is the issue, especially with the gti plastic arches, they trap moisture and then hide what's happening underneath.

its an old car so stuff like suspension , bushes , steering parts will maybe need changing at some point
but its easier to swap a shock than weld on new sills , arches etc so just make sure its rot free , most of the other stuff can be dealt with easily ish

My lad had a MK2 Golf in standard form and we did the VR6 total conversion must have been about 3 to 4 years ago we changed everything including stud pattern etc etc ,my lad even went to the trouble of wiring in the diagnostic plug so he could plug n play , just have a good look over it as you would with any old and make sure it starts ok with no overheating issues and stops as it should , and find out how long ago the conversion was done that will tell you if its any good .......Good luck
