I want to build my MX-5 into a 60's style sports car. I don't want to do the usual Lotus élan copy but something along the lines of a classic race car. At the moment I'm going down the lines of steel wheels, maybe leather bonnet straps, spun Ali mirrors etc etc. Any ideas? Or photos of something similar with some styling tips?

The thing that stand out is 60's sports cars had chrome bumpers whereas the MX5 has big areas of plastic. Maybe some sort of silver paint strip or even chrome trim might help the effect. Also, other than Elan, most sports cars had a grill rather than sloping front. Leather bonnet straps would be naff - they are something from 1930's and not 60's. Other than Lotus "look a like" there isn't much choice. To be honest unless you start adding a body conversion kit it'll still look like a MX5 with bits added on so why not be different - say Union Jack on bonnet, Cross of St George on bootlid, Welsh Dragon on one door and St Andrews cross on other door ? Then there is do the whole car in Union Jack like the Austin Powers E Type. Wire wheels would be neat - you can get bolt on types. Round spot and fog light on front also in keeping with theme. Luggage rack on bootlid ? Paul H

I was thinking of painting the plastic bumper with a silver/grey strip to mimic a bumper and maybe paint the top of the rear bumper a similar colour. I will bin the leather strap idea. What about a roundel? Are they going in the same bin as the straps? I was thinking of maybe stripping the bonnet and leaving it bare Ali (as mentioned on another thread) but it sounds like too much polishing to keep it looking half decent. I just want it to be a bit different to the normal lowered MX-5. I don't really like the look of the kits as they are difficult to pull off correctly.

If you put roundel then that is, IMO, drifting towards MOD styles so what about looking at MOD scooters for inspiration ? Another thought is aircraft style - roundel with teeth at front - Paul H
