Wow what a day! My first trackday and first worthwhile driving experience!Only just coming down off my high now. The car was Faultless despite every one of us expecting to blow up it never missed a beat despite being rev'd to 7500rpm all day! All this from a car that stood for 5 years!
No onboard video yet, Caroline owns the camera so once her dad gets me a copy i'll get it hosted!
The suspension and yoko's were brilliant, the car felt really stiff and never lost grip. Felt really proud it never spun out once.
We decided next on the list is a brake upgrade. GTI Calipers, vented discs and some sort of race pad. The brakes were good enough as I outbraked one of the many golfs 2 or 3 times but the heat warped the new discs and there is nothing left on the almost new pads!Crazai!
After the brakes were getting slicks definate! Been told I can get some part used ones for about £20 a piece so thats a definate because the new Yoko's are helf melted Then its polybush time, and polycarb windows. After that a S/S Janspeed exhaust. Ive been offered a metro Diesel rad inc all ness pipes which has twice the capactity of a petrol one which will definatly solve any issues with cooling. By the end of the year I should be able to afford a 1800 conversion, we'd then do up the head, set of cams and a mappable ECU.
Havent a clue where to start so heres the whole day.
Clocks went forward so we left and hour late, picked up my brothers friend later on and then stopped at a BP garage for some Super Unleaded ;D Filled the car to the neck and then a Jerry can just encase (wasnt sure what fuel comsumption would be like) Typed in the address to the Sat nab and off we went. Roads were empty so we cruised within the limits and arrived with good time before they decided to start.
Unloaded the car, met a few friends who had cars/were watching and went to the drivers breifing.
The organisers (who made an excellent job of it) took us all (about 40 cars) on a 3 lap familiarisation run.
One or two groups headed out before my run then Dad and I headed out for our first run, camera running, helmets on, engine at good temp.
Vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom! Took it relativly easy for the first few laps then I really opened her up and I kept getting told off by Dad for going to fast.
Then my brother took his go (he deserved a few runs for helping lots with the build) and came back in early with overheating, dumped out a load of water over the pitlane, I don't think he had the heating on and had it in the high revs the whole time.
My friend Jason with his 200+ bhp VTEC mini wired my fan on perminent, removed a second headlight for more airflow and made sure the heating was on all the time. We refilled the cooling system and rebled it. After that the temperature was never a problem!
I then took a friend out and I tried my hardest keeping it flat the whole way. The kink in the biggest straight I never lifted once for. Speedo wasnt working but whatever 5500rpm in 5th is was roughly my top speed.
Dad took a go then my bro and the final run was mines. After being passed all day I was up against two cars I could play with, a 2.0 sierra and a corsa with a shopping list and ghey wing/spoiler!
We dipped and dived, I was behind the two, caught the corsa at the first corner, ovetook him before the 2nd, caught the sierra, stayed on his bumper up the straight, passed left my braking way later that his and I was away ;D
Had an absolute blast and only one thing pi553d me off. Half way round a corner an impatient skyline sticks his nose up my inside and keeps her at it so I move left to avoid him he then steps the back out into a big drift (drifting was banned) and a golf decided he would push through the gap now and didnt give me any room or consideration either and I ended up two wheels on the grass and two on the kerb to avoid him.
Similar happened with two hyabusa engine'd kitcar things. The first I pulled over to let past. The 2nd wasnt anywhere near close enough to pass coming into a chicane then half way round he had caught me and instead of waiting til after the corner he squeezed me left onto a big kerb where I took out a cone. Went to give it 3rd to get going and got first and some rev limiter before I dipped the clutch. Much swearing!
Most cars today past us on the straights but we had a brilliant car round the corners. A Mk2 gold GTI owner commented
So that was pleasing. A 1.6 GTI 205 couldnt pull anyway atall round the corners and on the straights he didnt get away at an alarming rate. My brother absoltuly ate a Mk1 MX5 and in one long corner he tucked in behind an EVO5 and stuck with him the whole way round the corner, then promtly got pwned on the straight.
Other than the inconsiderate drivers it was fantastic! Metro served me well and to take such abuse it deserves the credit. Definatly hooked now.
Sorry for wiriting so much! Heres the pics!
