My week of car-less-ness, started off pretty good, rolling up and down the road in my V8, and the sapph, finishing nicely with a passenger ride in andy's Imp yesterday anyway My old man has temporarily aquired one of these. its not this one but its similar, a 2.0 GTI- something or other, standard apart from being chipped, and uprated lowered suspension. non turbo... Now the interesting thing is its a G reg like mine, but feels so new, rust was very minimal, infact nearest i saw was a little bubbling, but quite neat considering its age...16-17 years clunky tight gear change and clutch. Instead of a quirky pointy 80's tastic interior, you've got a comfy rounded standard Taxi alike interior with the wheel featuring the new Toyota logo with a reminder if its sporty ancestor, reminded me slightly of an Hyundai coupe, but ignore that! nice n comfy though, seats offer support and comfort and the wheel is in a good place with adjustments. nice one. Did not take me long to familiarize myself with it, its like the missing link between my Sapphire and my MK1 MR2, it will chugg along without a moan in 4th or 5th at most speeds, and it will rev its tats off through the gears. what an engine revs and torque, nice! Suspension is tight and a bit bumpy at times but keeping those standard 14's and big tyres was a saving grace, a great ride - ideal for a track or decent road. Being careful being in a compromising situation, and driving a car not mine on some tight country roads, i was trying to be careful, but dad was keen for me to give it some beans! Coming upto a 90 degree bend, he says "drop it down, and give it a bit." "OK" dropped into second and stepped on it! back end out, dads hands are looming overr , quick bit of corrective surgery by my bad self, and all worry is forgotten woo, what a machine. no understeer, and spins in the dry even with fatter rubber up at the back - this is a decent piece of kit, that took no time to get used to. what a machine I want one!!! he's hoping for over a grand, so maybe i'll hang on this time around... its well worth it, but maybe not ideal right now

funnily this is the only mr2 i don't usually like. As the mkI and mkIII are both sharp and seem more hardcore, and leaner. Whereas this one just seems, dunno, a bit podgy round the edges. But then if it goes well - who cares.

People always say this ojes the podger, and it handles bad, and it rides soft. I'd assumed from bar room talk that it was a similar driving experiance to a Lincoln Towncar...
I don't much like the Mk3 one at all to look at.
Mk2 is the nicer looking IMO.
Its on my "list" of cars I rather fancy, are cheap so theres no reason not to but that I still am unlikely to ever own.
I assume its the same lump as the G6 Calica GT in there? Sweet engine that is.

I know what you mean, when MK2's came out, i thought, hmm the originals were v nice, but liked the look of the new one. Its the MK3 that i though was just a Porsche mini me type thing. Minimalistic with the MK2 it can look smart. theres a world of potential i have previously ignored though, so long as its not all old skool Max Power, theres a load of stuff that could be done. Blimey, i quite like this actually!!! i know i know, i'd make some changes... As for the MK3, thats grown on me now, it does have its quirky own little character and is a hoot to hoon around in too

Alistair,
No it did not seem as big as i'd expected, maybe not as nippy as the mk1/3, just as much fun with sorted suspension and a "chip" can't comment on a standard one.

F-in-L has a standard lower spec 120-odd bhp, in black on an H-plate, which I have driven a few times.
So comes without the rear spoiler which makes it appear neater and more compact to me.
It's quick enough to be entertaining (the engine is about equal in power to the G engine 'til mid/higher rev range), and handles very nicely. While the interior is very 'Japanese looking' this means it's quiet and solid and in one piece! Also the driving position, and view out the front are great.
Also drove a mates lightly modded Rev1 Turbo, and that b*gger was quick! Came out of the first roundabout I encountered a sideways... though very easily catchable, unlike it's reputation.
I would prefer a Mk1, but like the Mk2.

Only 120bhp? my MK1 is meant to have that. sounds about right what you say. i'd be a bit lethal in a decent turbo! ;D

I repaired the backend of a MK2 Turbo for a friend a few years back and delivered it back to him. I'd never actually liked them initially but, boy, was I suprised at how these things went! I'd have one tomorrow but it would have to be a Turbo.
