That's roughly what I'd expect, certainly 20. The two furthest destinations have been Subic Bay and Matabungkay, with Subic being mainly highway. I'd estimated on that trip I'd got around 17, but that included the two hours to cover 13kms to get between home and the highway in either direction and some cutting around whilst there, so 20+ once outside Manila isn't an impossible goal. That's why I say engines here should be fitted with timers rather than odometers!  |

Not as cheap as some. I've just fuelled this morning at 75p a litre. Not too bad but twice what I used to pay in Malaysia. Still the upside is that pretty much everything else is peanuts. Even at that, I can't get too excited, given the mileage I do. Anyway, this morning I have discovered that I have now cracked the secret of the messless oil change. Historically I've always been a mucky pup and either missed whatever container I have to catch it from the sump, or I've spread it all around transferring it into something to dispose of. This time, I thought ahead. I got an 8 litre plastic box with a sealed snap-on lid. This stands around 6-7 inches high so happily sits under the sump and is wide enough for me not to miss it! Having dropped the oil the other day, now was time to dispose of it. Drill a hole in two opposing corners, stick funnel (or the cut off top of a drink bottle of choice) into empty oil can and pour. A nice controllable flow with zero drips. A definite first! I'll put the old oil out for the little garbage lady tomorrow. She'll no doubt sell it to one of the fine food emporiums that surround us.  Oh, and happy Aquino Day! I mention this because I was ruing the fact that I'd done the track rod on Friday, rather than wait until today when I'm number coded, when I suddenly realised that my Little Darling was asleep in her pit and not at school. A quick check of the calendar confirms it is a public holiday and a peek on the Metro Manila Development Agency (an oxymoron if ever there was) site tells me number coding is lifted for the day. So been out for a good early blast. Who knows, I may get my average speed up to 9kph! |

As you will be aware, I somewhat despair over the state of my interior trims and one that has been bugging me the most has been the 20 random bits of black plastic masquerading as the centre cubby lid. This was nominally held together by a piece of top quality vinyl skivertex leatherette but wasn't actually attached to the vehicle. One day, I'll have some cash again and splurge out on a load of bits from the UK, but until then, something had to be done. I'd had a weigh up and figured a 8x8 inch square of ply, using the old cover could suffice for now. As providence would have it, I saw my neighbour carrying some sheets into his house and begged for any offcuts he may have. Anyway, one piece of ply, some mighty bond shoe repair glue and six self rappers later, we have a cubby lid that goes the same way as the car! It's not 100% but I reckon that only I know this and can manage not to dwell on it too much. The only problem now is termites. |

It's good to see you're taking it back to it's more agricultural heritage with more wood bits. Maybe an ash frame next?
I'm surprised you're filling the car with rappers, though. Is that in deference to the bottle opener, or have your musical tastes changed somewhat?

I'll have you know that this was a quality repair, using the finest materials and craftsmanship in the true spirit befitting of a hand built vehicle. Had I used that bit of delaminating ply that's been at the side of the road for six months, rained on, peed on and run over by several vehicles, that would have been a bodge! There's still a little hope for me yet. |

True, but just because the rest of the population has a vehicle related death wish, doesn't mean I have to go that native!
Having spent several years getting the childhood propaganda from the Tufty Club and Green Cross Man out of my head, it's going to be fun (or injurious) going to a "normal" handed country again though. 😊

Well your "bodge" looks better than some of my "bodges!"....Any news on rail related job-fronts? Sort of, kind of, maybe. At the moment there are three possibilities on the go. A review of the KL-Singapore high speed line proposals, an Asian Development Bank job looking at proposals for a new line in Mindanao (where all the fighting is) or project coordinator for a 45km line from Manila heading north. All three are fairly imminent and they have come to me so it's first with the cash gets me! So nothing definite but... |

Bumpers. Yes we're returning to my current favourite theme. Shagged plastic.
So me and Pup 1 have been for a good walk and on our return, he had a bowl of icy water whilst I cracked open the first, and well deserved cold one of the day.
We then stood in the garage and contemplated the bumpers.
"Look old son" he always calls me that, "you know you ain't going to fork out for more of the same, so the only way you're going to get exactly what you want is to make 'em yourself. You've got the space now. All you need is a grinder and a welder. I'll help by sniffing around a lot and having the odd piddle on your vice"
And do you know, he's right.
If I do them myself, I can follow the existing lines pretty closely and make the front so I can integrate the existing spoiler and driving lights.
I've found a place near me that can do sheets of 1/8 steel and, even better, can cut to shape for me.
A plan is being hatched. 😊
