Hey everyone, not sure if this is the right place for this, but i was just wondering if anyone has built a big garage/workshop in their back garden, and if so what did you build it out of etc?
I've been looking at pre fab garages on eBay, and I'm not sure if I'm best off doing that or building something from scratch, either from breeze block or wood?
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks very much!!
Alex

Have a look at the link in my sig bud, mine was built entirely by me (I'm not a builder, and had the help of a couple of non-builder mates along the way). It's brick and block construction, 40' x 17' and has cost me around £10-11k all in (a big chunk of that was down to the floor construction I had to use - a beam and block floor and 38 tons or so of concrete foundations...!).

I built my own garage a while back. I considered a pre fab but rejected it as I had to dig my garage into the ground and it would be supporting next doors garden. The footings were dug by hand and filled it with concrete,I then had someone come and build the walls with a cavity. I then did the rest, floor roof doors window etc. It cost me about £10k but well worth the effort,it also has a load of electricity points and loads of lighting including tubes over the workbench. If you can I would suggest you also dig a pit and set it up properly with a proper jack on runners,it's the only thing I wished I had done.

yeah i think thats the best idea really, and i was thinking of doing a pit as you say, whilst I'm there i might aswell. the main concern would be getting the cars into the dry again, as I'm renting a workshop at the moment, which will go once we have the house, so my cars will be out in the elements..... not good really!

Nice one Alex. For more garage inspiration take a look at thegaragejournal.com. You'll be blown away by some of the stuff in the gallery section. My build is there entitled "British garage planned". www.garagejournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7

Interesting thread this. I'm about to embark on a garage roughly 20 x 30ft and have been looking at various timber and metal prefab options. Ive not had a quote for block or brick build but I'm pretty sure it would be out of my budget. Looking forward to the pics of your build miniman1986.

Well new stuff isn't, however if your time is free and you can spend it denailling used lengths you can usually get if for free as nobody seems to bother recycling it from the demo sites anymore. Probably the cheapest way would be thermalite blocks above damp course then render over them to weatherproof

As long as its dry, secure and big enough for 3 cars and be as cheap as possible as I've spent all my money on building the car which will live in it.

I did my garage, 7x5m felt roof, blockwork. Just under 2k. Did a tonne of work myself. All the digging, oversite, just got a mate to do blockworkwalls as was too busy with my own work at that time (sparky).
