Going for that fatal second viewing of a '67 Herald tomorrow evening, it's looking a bit scabby but hopefully generally sound. If we buy we'll be faced with a few problems, firstly we need to get it tested, which obviously depends on what a state it's in, secondly though is what to do to it.
Anyone give me any inspiration on the modding side, nice wheels, ideas for paint, I'm thinking a two tone scheme, also it has a 13/60 fibreflab front but the condition is dubious, anyone know how much these are to replace? Pics please and horror stories of herald ownership if applicable.

They don't need much - touch of the stick and rostyles or minilites and you're there!
They do "slightly ratty look" very well.

Heralds really wear their scabs well, not many cars can pull it off. Might be worth leaving the body as it is

OK, a better answer! Check the chassis over carefully, in particular the main chassis rails where they dip under the diff and the "boot riggers" that extend under the boot floor. CHances are they will have been patched before but depending on how well that's been done and/or if there's more corrosion it can get quite involved to fix properly. Then check the other outriggers that come out from the main central rails to the "sill" rails that are behind the decorative screwed on sill sections. The bodywork is generally less imprortant because of the seperate chassis but you want to check seat belt mounts areas and the front floor pan by the pedals as serious stuff here could fail a MOT. Repair secions are available for wheel arches and other common rot spots. A 12/50 should have a sunroof and full width mesh grille It would have originally have had the more powerful 1147 engine but if you let me have the number I could ID what its got. The 1147 engines can be tuned using mostly Spitfire parts but you could also throw in a 1300 or 1500 from a later Herald, Spit or Dolomite - its all bolt in stuff. There are loads of upgrades available for brakes and suspension to make them handle really well. Two tone paint was available on earlier cars but I can't remember if it was an option on 12/50's Anyway it can look quite smart. New fibreglass front ends are somewhere between £100 - £150 There are quite a lot of wheel options. Have a look here for example. I've got a set of Cosmics that will probably be for sale soon. You won't really get any ownership horror stories from me. Parts are so easily available and they're a fun car to drive. I've also broken a 13/60 convert recently so if there's anything you need let me know as I've still got quite a few parts lying around. Ooof I love cosmics, if we get it I'd be interested, or the 'mags look understated too. Hoping to go look in a bit, I'll take pics if I can for assessment, I'm not familiar with Heralds really. That coupe looks the nuts and I love the two tone 'tesse. My mum's old vitesse was pretty swish but didnt look that sharp. Thanks for the help so far

(reads tale of scabby 12/50...) I think most of the Herald points have been covered but remember this had a sunroof as standard so not only do you have a scabby sunroof but 30 years of water leaking in. The engine is the 1147cc Herald unit with a Spitfire cam fitted. The Solex carb has a habit of piddling far too much petrol away. On the plus side you get disc brakes while 1200 owners have to live with drums. I've broken one or two Heralds in the past, including an extremely scabby 12/50. If there's anything you really can't find then I may be able to help. I also have a scabby 13/60 which I'll be breaking this summer.
