I've been working on my engine today having fitted the new rad, thermostat, flushed the engine, replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm, coil, leads, plugs and ripped off the airbox and slapped the traditional K&N on it. Got it all back up and running but have now noticed something else. When running, it's smoking out the exhaust. It's WHITE smoke and obviously if I pump the pedal its pumps out a cloud. Trying to think back to when I had brain cells, does this mean my valve seals are knackered? If not, what does white smoke mean on a pinto?

white smoke or steam?
White steam is usually had gasket gone.
White smoke could be that its pulling brake fluid back past the servo non-return valve and burning it off.
valve seals would normally be blue smoke.

I just had the head done by a guy ive recently found out is decidedly dodgy. So dodgy, when he put the engine back together he decided not to even fit a thermostat! Shouldnt steam diappear quickly into the aire? This appears to hang around for a while. Also how do i tell the difference?

Stick your hand over the end of the exhaust and see if it gets wet after a while. If it does its probably head gasket or simlar.
White smoke can man its running rich. Does it smell petroly and foul up plugs at all?

If it's white oil smoke it's normally a dead ring but then the whole road would be filling up with clouds and clouds of stinking white oil smoke. Probably steam and it could be water in the fuel, cold engine vs hot day or it could be the old headgasket letting a bit by. In my youth I remember many Mk2 Escorts and Capris letting rings go and filling the entire town with choking white smoke

In my youth I remember many Mk2 Escorts and Capris letting rings go and filling the entire town with choking white smoke When I replaced the plugs, a couple of them were oily. Could this be part of the dead ring theory also? If so, would it be cheaper to replace the engine than redo the pistons? I've got a recently recon'd pinto from a sierra in my garage and thinking might just swap the whole thing. If so, who want to do it and how much you gonna charge me?

If its rings it will be an oily smoke. Could be grey/white or could be blue, but you would know its oil If he hasnt put the thermostat back in he could have known its got overheating problems so more than likely a head gasket. Like Slater said put your hand over the exhaust and see if it gets wet. Isnt the inlet manifold heated, its a while since I have had a pinto head off but is there not a water port in between 2 and 3 inlets if so and the gasket has gone it could be getting water in here. Just another possibility worth checking.

And indeed it was overheating, but that was due to someone fitting the wrong rad to the car. It had a single cored rad from something like a 1.3 capri or escort. Ive replaced it with the proper new twin cored rad and new thermostat and had it running for over 30 minutes and it never went above half on the guage, although it was it this time I noticed the white smoke/steam I'm now getting so hacked off I'm even thinking of cutting my losses and selling it which I know would be a mistake but I'm getting very frustrated with it sitting under a car cover mocking me everytime I walk past! If, and only if i get rid, i'll go for a Mark 2 Scirocco GT as this was the car i liked second of all the cars i owned
