Was a 3dr XR4x4 Sierra ever available ?

I have never seen or heard of one, but my 40 year old cousin insists he test drove one "back in the day". I'm not convinced!

They built the 3dr model untill the very end (93) for the Euro market, bu I think the most powerful one was the 2.0 TC GLSi.

You can see them on Ebay France and Germany sometimes listed as a Coupe

Heard of Ferguson conversions, on stuff like the chap says about the capri. never heard of 4wd XR4's, but theres nowt stopping an enthusiast building one with later parts, theres a few converted 3 door 4wd Cosworths about.

you could buy 3 door XR4x4's in some of the more snowy countries, they are rare though as they didnt sell well.

The RWD sierras all had ported front chassis rails for a 4wd system. Ford always wanted the sierra to have 4wd models in the lineup right from the outset so made it cheaper and easier for themselves by using many common chassis and body parts. Apparently its pretty easy to convert a rwd sierra into a 4wd. Ive seen a couple of xr4i conversions knocking about.

there are chasis rail differences between 2wd and 4wd models, it only becomes an issue if you lower a 2wd car thats been converted to 4wd, the mid to late run mk2 shape all had the wider part on the tunnel for the front prop and transfer case and the front x member from the 4x4 will bolt straight into a 2wd or a P100 (i know, i did it)

There were definatly, 100%, 3dr XR4x4's made in europe by Fords, they never got homologated for motorsport unfortunatly.

you could also buy 2.9i V6 sierras over there in rwd as opposed to only being available here as 4x4's, i have a gearbox from one in my garage ready for a 24v to go on the front of it, without the extra trans drag they were not far off 140mph cars.

If it's a 4i converted to 4x4, the tunnel has to be altered to allow clearance for the transfer box, nothing to do with Cossie bits.
The diffs etc from a v6 4x4 are identical to Cossie 4x4. Cossie 4x4 suspension is direct fitment for XR4x4 kit, just with different spring & shock rates.

If you look at the rear arb, if it is fitted to the standard 4i mounts, you have a Mk1 rear end. If new mounts have been created, it's a Mk2 rear (but I'm sure you already knew that).

As mentioned, 3dr 4x4s were available in Europe, as was a 2.9rwd.
