...When a retired chap confronts you about working on your own car on your own driveway.
Telling you to stop spannering on your old wreck in such a respectable neighbourhood.
And how you're making such a deafening racket with your screwdriver and spanners that you're upsetting his friday afternoon several doors down.
...And accusing you of being a gypsy.
Sorry, just on a bit of a downer about the whole thing and lost all motivation to do anything now.

You ignore him. Unless you're operating a business or creating such a racket that it causes a noise nuisance you are committing no offences.
Just a busy body.

Explain the situation clearly so there is no misunderstanding.. he might not think he is coming across as an curse word sort of thing. Then if he continues being an curse word tell him where to go and ignore him as suggested above. My neighbors now are pretty safe and in fact very helpful whn it comes to car/bike stuff.. but had some nightmares in the past.. as long as you're not bashing away in the middle of the night or pouring waste oil all over his garden I see no issue?

What qwerty said.
My own experience was that an old stickybeak reported me to the local authority for running a car repair business from home. Sure enough, 2 pretty embarrassed looking local council officials rocked up when I was working on a car, specifically my sister's Scenic II. It took about 2 minutes to tell them that (a) I'm not actually all that good at fixing cars, (b) no, I wasn't running a business, and (c) I'm a Cisco Network Engineer.
They apologised, profusely, and left. I saw one of said officials in Sainsbury's a while ago, and he said hello to me!

Another vote for what querty said.
From my experience when my dad was spannering/hammering/welding/spraying his own cars the reply my neighbour got was something like ''clear off, think about it, and come back to me through the official channels next month...''
We heared nothing more.

the side i don't like (young family, irritating children, that attitude where they seem to think everyone is *really* interested in their mundane life and their show off kids), i tend to scowl at them like i want to jab them in the gums with a screwdriver if they look at me/come too close/try to talk to me.
the old boy and his missus next door i talk to for hours about everything from the weather to cars to tractors to gardening to taking the curse word out the scrubbers trolling past from the estate to the shop.
maybe I'm just a grumpy old bstard 30 years too early......

Just carry on. Be patient with his complaints, but don't let it infringe on your hobby. If he gets very irate, politely suggest he take it up with the Council and that you'd be happy to discuss it through official channels. Really, if you're working at reasonable hours and making a reasonable amount of noise there's very little he can do to stop you. These things often blow over and seem to stem from a misunderstanding on the part of the aggrieved. If he complains again, see if you can catch him off guard by offering to discuss the problem over a cuppa, should take the wind out of his sails a bit and give you the opportunity to find out what his perceived problem actually is.

^^thats very true, they're not too bad round my way though as theyve all got allotments and tractors to keep em occupied, except the weasely little bloke over the road who has his own 'layby' in front of his house (i think it used to be a bus stop by the looks, i find the legalities of it being 'his' quite dubious). he lives next door to the only shop for 3 miles and acts surprised when people park in 'his' layby, and regularly opens his front door and has a go at them not to park there. my carpenter mate unwittingly parked in it the other day when dropping my kitchen off to me- lets face it, if youre in a bloody great van, do you park in the empty layby, or block the road? little weaselly man came storming out of his front door towards said van, just as my 6'5" tall, tattoed head to toe including most of his face mate came round the other side to open the back door, for little man to do a very quick heel-turn and run back up his path and slam the door behind him without saying a word- priceless!

Justanotherhigh, you mention screwdrivers and spanners. So no compressors, noisy power saws and drills etc?
If you were using noisy tools I'd still say you had a right to use them on your property, but be considerate - ie not all day, or at unsocial hours.
If you're not using noisy tools, or not doing so very much, I would tell him to sling his hook. Of course, whether you do so politely or not is up to you, and your assessment of the chap in question.
Does this fellow have a lawnmower? If so, I'd go round and complain about it next time he cuts his grass.

Is this not what all we used to do on a Sunday ? Back when cars required regular maintainence I find it quite refreshing my neighbors think I'm a bit odd but only ask what I'm currently fixing.

I had a similar problem a while back, when I had my vitara(no I don't cut hair) bearing in mind it was off road prepped the residents association (it was parked in the car park of the flats)decided my car was too dirty after a day off roading and actually complained! if you aren't being overly noisy I say screw him you pay your taxes for your land you can do what you like!(within reason of course)hope you can resolve it amicably.

Both my neighbours didn't used to talk to me. The old woman next door used to take photos of me and my mates putting scrap cars on trailers and her and her husband came out moaning when fumes off my overfuelling p38 v8 were entering their house, saying they were going to report me. Which I replied with "for what? Starting my own car on my own drive?". Still waiting for someone to come and see me. Although that was a disrespectful action by myself, and do have more consideration to them (by not leaving my Range Rover running on the drive for too long). I don't talk to either of them on principle now even though the old man comes round from time to time asking if its ok to access my back garden to clean their conservatory or something. The other neighbour used to moan about my mates parking in front of his house even though his driveway is at the rear, and has even put conifers down our dividing wall so he doesnt have to look at my collection of cars. Funnily enough though ever since I've fixed his car he's all pally pally. My moms neighbours have had the council out less than a month ago because of the my cars parked on her drive and on the road. As soon as the council found the house was privately owned and we werent operating a business they left. Now theres a 25ft long recovery truck parked on the drive with a car on the bed.

RETIRED = too much free time, buggar all to do, and has to fill his day making himself feel important by poking his nose into things that don't concern him Sounds like my stepdad the Victor Meldrew incarnate, makes me laugh at some of the stuff he guffs at But to the point, if its on your property and your not grinding and hammering at 3 in the morning you have nowt to be concerned

Tell the glipe to jog on! Tell him to raise it with the council. I take it you are allowed to mow you lawns where you live?! If it continues then inform your local police reference harassment by the pillock!

Tell em to f**k off. Eventually if you persist they'll put their house up for sale and you'll get a new set of neighbours and get to play "does the new neighbour like cars lottery". If the new neighbours continue to be arsey put a 1973 Oldsmobile on the drive next to your broken radioactive Multipla as a shot across the bows. This will accelerate their decision to sell the house on and live with the boring people.

The guy just sounds like a massive ar$ehole. If he'd approached you in any sort of civilised manner he might have been worth attempting to negotiate with, but if he just rocks up and starts having a go and insults you he's clearly a tw@t and its therefore perfectly OK to ignore him.

I'd have politely informed him that-
A. He is a very rude and nosey person. B. it's got feck-all to do with him what you do on your drive. C. It's your own motor and can fix it on your own drive if you want to. D. That you're only on this earth a short time and maybe suggest he go out ballroom dancing or rambling? After all, isn't that what old people do?? (In relation to all people who fix cars outside houses being travellers?) E. He should slurp on your meaty sausage and do one!
Do not let this sort of garbage bother you mate. Let him inform the pope or whoever. You're doing nowt wrong. Crack on with your jobs.
Oh, and most old people are great. Some of the best conversation and advice can be had from older people IMO.

I have neighbours that don't talk to me.
It's great - I don't waste any time talking to people I'm not interested in and car jobs would take me twice as long if they wanted a chat every time I went out my front door.
They've moaned a few times about random things which is ironic as it's quite clear that they have no pride in anything and their house resembles something off life of grime.
I just ignore them they soon go away.
