So my Volvo Amazon has this rev counter in a pod on the dash and it sort of looks out of place. The speedo is, like many others of the period, a linear type.. as in it goes sideways instead of round in a circle? I'm terrible at explaining..
Anyway I was wondering if any rev counters exist in the world which follow this same principle, a sideways line rather than a circular gauge! I think this would look awesome.
Suggestions and ideas welcome!
Cheers

That's pretty wild. Dunno if it would suit the Amazon but it's cool!

I think you could adapt it to drive other sorts of indicators other than LEDs or if you could find a linear indicator of some kind you could print out your own scale for it to point at, maybe even use the strip speedo mechanism from an Amazon, print an RPM scale instead of a MPH one and build a circuit to drive that?
Probably pretty simple for anyone who understands electronics as you only have to replace the cable input with a motor and spin it at the correct speed. I suppose you could even drive a cable off the front of the engine and have a mechanical version.

You could, just use an analogue to digital converter (a transducer) in place of the coil and change the amount of 'pulses' it would receive.

should be easy enough to convert (that's just a voltmeter, isn't it?) Get a mate who's handy with an Arduino - get a speed sensor fitted to the engine of some form (or use the ignition system if you'd prefer, bit more fiddly though) Feed that signal into the Arduino, and simply get it to output a regulated 12v PWM signal into a MOSFET. If I'm right, that avometer should also work on a 0-12v input, so "10v" is actually 1v 0rpm = 0% 1000rpm = 1v 2000rpm = 2v etc, etc Also means it will work up to 12,000rpm And besides mounting it, the meter can be untouched

I know this is now moving further away from a 'sideways' rev counter, but this is another idea I've always wanted to do for a rev counter. Mount some of these in a dash, you just can't beat the warm glow of a classic VU meter. Then mount a small microphone onto the engine (ideally tucked as far away as possible) and with the help of a potentiometer to 'fine tune' it, have it set up to respond throughout the rev range (in gear/under load ideally) Obviosuly the faster you go the more susceptible it'll be to road and wind noise, but I was only ever thinking of it in a fun/tongue in cheek kind of way - although if it's mounted carefully enough, there's no reason why it shouldn't be fairly representative of engine revs??

All these ideas are full of win, now, how can we fit ALL of them into ONE car?

Might be a silly idea, get another strip speedo, print a new calibrated face for it, get a cable drive tach, I'm quite certain a early sprite one could be converted to fit any engine, and drive the speedo/tach off the dissy drive, the instrument could be calibrated by somebody like speedy cables to be quite accurate,

I’ve not actually fitted mine to a car yet, i bought it at a local car show new in the box and i have only tested it to see if it powers up I have seen used pod rev counters sell for more than £30 on eBay so I’m surprised these haven’t all sold Plus is unusual because it’s an in car dwell meter/ points monitor Pics show it switched on, it has 3 brightness settings this is the lowest

They're cool, I'm going to get one! All it needs is a green bulb/bulb cover.
