First off. Sorry, I hate these threads....but these are something I know nowt about and could do with a bit of advice.
I'm after a full size 4x4, ie not car based Forester type thing. I've kind of decided on a Discovery 1 but am I over looking something else?
Got about a grand to spend, mpg not an issue.....what should I be looking out for? And how do you lower a Discovery?! Literally can't find a picture of one 'done'. Don't want to do the Tonka toy thing.
Thank you

Out of interest, why are you looking for a full sized 4x4, but then looking to lower it? Seems kinda counter-productive, especially considering how good first gen Forester Turbos are...

Troll thread. Seriously, every possible input for some sort of lowered Discovery on Google gives you this.. You want it for a grand, you want a 'proper' 4x4 and you want to lower it. I dunno about anyone else, but I'm confused and uninspired. I expected to be telling you to get a lwb Suzuki Vitara 2.0 V6 and swap it for the Mustang 3.7 V6 as they're fundamentally the same engine. But your initial bait just doesn't have the flavour..

Because everything is better lowered right.
I need it for a 6 mile daily commute so it doesn't need to be practical.
I'm sorry MikeyMK that you are easily confused. Thanks for the picture though - a google image search of 'Land Rover Discovery Lowered' didn't through it up.

Ford Maverick/Escape AKA Mazda Tribute, they're lovely to drive as standard, but why buy a 4WD and lower it, just buy a go-cart and road legalise it or a road legal quad.....All are just about possible if you search around for long enough, a disco for a grand is going to warrant a damn good search for rust before purchase...

Obvious full size 4x4's are Discovery, Land Cruiser, Patrol, Trooper etc.
I've just bought a Discovery, and -1" lowering springs are available off the shelf, not that I haven't looked...

Slammed 4x4's are for winners simply because they look so much more extreme than slammed cars. I totally dig them. If I didn't have my Delica (how it currently is) I'd be looking to buy one specifically to slam. So much potential right there.
Do it, please!

As said above, a sub 1k discovery is likely to be pretty crispy and in need of fairly serious welding. with a bit of searching, you might find a P38 range rover for that money - much less chance of being rotten but it will probably need mechanical repairs - many are cheap due to failed air suspension, which you may well be ditching anyway.... Otherwise in that budget, look at Fronteras. I don't know about the 5 doors, but I had a SWB 3 door one and it was a great car. Early ones are leaf springs on the rear, which later changed to coils - either of which should be slammable with ease. The front is a torsion bar system. There is a bolt at the end of each bar which you wind in or out to raise or lower. SWB also has wider arch flares than the LWB versions. Oh, and the roof comes off for summertime!

That's no guarantee either I bought our L200 cheap and spend more time fixing it than driving it. Best to look at any prospective purchase very very thoroughly, oh and take of the rose tinted specs I learnt that the hard way.

Thanks, some good advice there.
Not keen on Fronteras, Nivas a good call though, hadn't thought of them. Only a couple on ebay at mo though.
You're right about the rosetinted goggles. I've fallen victim to that many a time.

I've been running a face lift Maverick/Terrano on and off for about 4 years now. It gets totally neglected, parked up for months on end then pushed straight back into service (often towing) without a thought. Been totally reliable, pulls like a train with straight through exhaust but does like a drink (25ish mpgs - 2.7 td)

Fannywhacker - the Disco is a good option imho, plenty about, plenty of spares, some have V8s....what more do you want, go get one!
