Life’s got in the way for quite a while but yesterday me and my son did our CBT test together so it was time to get the moped out and sell it to raise 125 funds. That meant moving the triumph....  After a minimal amount of spannering on the starter with my now much stronger son able to rock the engine the millimetre I needed on its mounts to get it realigned on new studs and slid home. We lambasted ourselves for forgetting the fresh fuel to fill the bowls and connected the fresh battery thinking - no chance. But after a couple of signs of life and some mighty backfires the addition of jump leads to the running frontera span it until it ran on one then two then vrooom! Euphoria was short lived as she coughed and died. But a slight choke adjustment and she fired right back up and sounded pretty healthy. Although the garage was full of smoke that burned the eyes and throat. Snicked into first and eased the clutch up. She was trying but stuck fast after several years of layup, a little gentle dance on the pedals was having no effect so I went all in. Half throttle resulted into a lovely bark and I side stepped the clutch - stall ummm. Dead mans click - ah the engine has rocked on tired mounts and pulled the rested on battery terminal clear. Back on and we’re running again. Son pushing and another launch there’s a clonk from the back axles and... daylight! I’m trundling out of the garage! |

I’m back in love and whilst 5 years locked away hasn’t done her any favours she’s still pretty and not too much worse for wear. Do I find time to use her or let her go to someone who will? Now the real shonky ness can begin it involved a bike rack and not as many straps as I ideally wanted because the ratchet parts have vanished - I suspect the newly stronger offspring!  |

We got home and found some little scrote had tried to make of with the mighty TS50 and the ignition barrel and kill switch damaged.  Unperturbed we drained the syrup claiming to be unleaded and filled the bowl with carb cleaner whilst we popped for some of Tesco’s finest unleaded. After some kicking and 1/2 mile of pushing it in 2nd gear it screamed like only a tiny two stroke can. All in all a good day. Anyone in the market for a complete and running but needing tidying TS50? |

Mojo has been low for a while vehicle wise a management buyout of my employer of the last 20 years has taken more out of me than it’s probably worth but hey ho. Today I decided to try and get the Frontera back in service. Pre mot poking led to a big hole about 2 months ago and it’s been sidelined ever since. I ordered some steel the day after the poking but today I dragged myself out to give it a go. I ride a desk for a living and this is all new to me. I bought 1mm steel which seemed to match what was there it didn’t seem to bad to bend. I started at the top and worked down I lacked any scrap flat bar to use to bend over but I did find an old table leg that helped it all seemed a bit rudimentary but I was surprised the result was reasonable bearing in mind I didn’t measure anything and mainly just clamping it in the worlds cheapest most rotten workmate and used my body weight. It’s really quite a big panel I started with 250mm square of metal.  It’s a poor picture of the whole it extends forward a lot further at the bottom of the sill where water has obviously been trapped.    I’ve since trimmed it with snips and made another triangular piece to get back to good metal above. I’ve also taken the wire brush to the surface rust you can see in the pic. I haven’t yet cut all the thin pitted metal out but I will before I proceed Next question is whether I pay a garage to mig it in. Have a go with two batteries and a rod in a jump lead. I have rods and a self darkening helmet I bought on a whim in the middle of lidl a while ago. If I do it I’ll leave a slight overlap rather than butt weld Or totally cheat and use some old wayside adhesives panel structural panel bond I have in the garage I replaced a corner of the sill cover (not inner) with a pre bought and bent panel on the motorhome with this 7 years ago and it’s still as good as the day I did it - so quite tempting. Although it’s effectively a plate I only left a 1vm overlap and the panel bond acts like a really good seam sealer and then I just sanded and used a skim of filler. I’m not sure I would on a monocoque but don’t really have an issue when there’s a big beefy ladder frame and the panel is decorative. Thoughts - I think it’s obvious the way a lazy me is leaning. |
