what to look for in a "barn find" 2002, what is the main killer of these beasts, problems ect?

Only a 2002Tii will have injection - a rudimentary Bosch system... fine if they are working right, but apparently a bit of a swine if they are not (I don't know how true this is, but I read it in C&SC).
Tii's are probably the most sought after though as they are rapid for a 30-35 yr old car.

Still slower than a standard Sprint Came out a year later as well.......and cost an awful lot more as well. And wasn't as well specced. <pimp/lecture mode off > |

Check for rust first. They can rust just about anywhere so have a look in all the usual places - wings, floorpans, sills, valances etc. Particular problem area is where the rear suspension bolts on the boot floor and inner wheelarches.
Then, if it looks sound, start thinking about checking about the mechanicals. don't know much about them, sorry.
Engines should be sound enough, though, I would have thought, being a BMW.

Still slower than a standard Sprint Came out a year later as well.......and cost an awful lot more as well. And wasn't as well specced. Untrue. Yes a dolopshite sprint gets to 60 a second quicker, but has 4mph lower top whack. I would say a 2002 is a much more attractive car as well.  |

Nah s'only two miles an hour at the top end (118-116)........And that's assuming it's the producing the baseline 127BHP - which most of them didn't - most produced more |

larger brake booster 23 mm master cylinder larger 10.08 in (256 mm) diameter front brakes, larger calipers/pads thats only true for lhd spec tii's that had porper type brakes. over here we suffer with twin remote servo's that are an absolute  ache. tii m/c's and servos are the same as other 2002's. the discs are different, as are the hubs for the larger spindles, but also the legs are different to fit the larger calipers. which, incidentally, are 518 e12 four pots hung upside down and swapped left to right. things to look for- all 02's use 4 pots, one or more pistons on each caliper will be seized to heck. the rear wheel cylinders will probably have leaked and let all the fluid out, and the brake master cylinder will have to be re-sealed and honed. the clutch cylinder will probably have done this too. watch out for body grot on the bonnet and front valence. bonnets are £600 new and front panels are £550 because you can't get valences. headlight reflectors will have lost their chroming, £55 each reflector. bushes might have perished, but these are meanial things. biggest thing to check for is bodged repairs. they lead to this-  which will mean you have to cut it out to this-  the big threaded pin is what holds the axle on..... also, if its a tii, its probably had the front cover bodged where the alternator adjusting bracket fits on, they strip and crack because it was a curse word idea. |

panels and loads of stuff are available from jaymics of norfolk. pattern stuff (what little is available) is reasonably priced. genuine prices can cause a heart condition!

BMW can supply any part except the body shell for a reasonable price, jaymic also have a vast number of parts, so don't worry about that, rust is the main problem, check where the front chassis rails meet the bulkhead inside the car and under the bonnet , the boot floor and strut tops, footwells, and bellow the A pillar under the wing pannel, most of the rust you can see on the outside is not a problem as you can bolt on new doors bonnets wings etc The main advantage of the tii is the better suspension the krugelfisher injection is complicated and often gets binned in favour of carbs which offer more power, but the engine has other differences as well making it more favorable for modification. It also has better front brakes, these can be upgraded further but the tii suspension legs are needed for the conversion. just spend hours on the net as I did all the information is there, you must look at www.realoem.com as well as it has every part listed for almost all BMW's with blown up diagrams, its realy usefull for researching parts interchangeability |

2002tii- do you mean the m535i/volvo caliper and e21 323i vented disc hub combo?
new tii struts from jaymic are £140 each, I thought that quite reasonable for genuine, obselete parts.
