Here it is - my shiny new 1.9 GTI, which I'll be running as a project car for Retro Cars magazine. Can you buy a retro hot hatch for under a grand (er, yes), and modify it on a modest monthly budget on the mean streets of southwest London? Have I bought a diamond or a dud? Will it get nicked tonight? Time will tell... I've owned it for six hours now and already managed to break something, then fix it with pliers and picture wire. SUCCESS! steering wheel and gear knob wants throwing far , far, far away , but other than that very nice . But they are classic (90's) period mods along with the Magnex exhaust and sparco strut brace. There used to be a red one in Leicester with a 3" outwardly rolled exhaust (like the sort that every self respecting RS turbo had fitted) and a set of 5 spoke GTI-6 wheels. Looked awesome. I also had one as my first hot hatch at the age of 20. I seem to remember the insurance costing more than it cost to buy the car in the first place! Despite the numerous electrical faults, sagging rear torsion beam, shocking brakes (iffy master/wheel cylinders), dubious dimma petrol cap and clear rear lights, it was a fun car and I have good memories of it. Anyway, nice buy - hope you enjoy it! How bad is the cracks above the rear window and along the sill?

Gotta love the gti's ive had loads first one at 18 obviously the first mod was to buy a citroen bx 16v and swap the lump (bx was cheaper than a 405mi16 and had a throttle body which opened both flaps at the same time) my fav 205 I own was a 205 van stripped out with a cam'd up mi16 and chipped ecu :-) my wife wont let me have another as they used to get me in trouble

Me and my brother were talking about 205's yesterday and how I regretted selling mine. That is a lovely looking one you've got there. Looking forward to more updates

That looks lovely Darren . Did you not have a string of 205s beforehand? There is something about 205s which bring a smile to your face upon driving them. Even with the few issues it seems you got it for a sensible amount of cash as well . As for your mods they are cool in a period kind of way IMO . Saying that, I reckon it's your fuel gauge and temp gauge which are working .

I was always curse word with names. You probably already know this but it is worth cleaning up the brown harness connector by the gearbox/cylinder head which should help in getting your gauges to work correctly .

That so needs orange indicators!
whatever you do with it, take great care of the dash, the phase1 dash is made from very fragile unobtanium and is quite sought after!
it actually looks wonderfully straight and original, rare for a "cheap" gti these days, I;d almost be reconsidering the direction of the project tbh, as there's plenty of unoriginal cheap later cars about, the early ones are getting harder and harder to find!

Well, it finally came back from the auto electrician. All of these things work now... Who'd have thought you'd need to partially dismantle the gearbox to make the speedo work?! Anyway, now that everything's shipshape, it's time to crack on with the modifications. I've got two weeks until I have to submit the next installment to the mag, by which time I need to have had the new suspension fitted. Will I make the deadline? Well, you'll just have to wait there on the edge of your seat... Oh, and I bought the car a little treat. So, here the GTI sits, surrounded by VAG, awaiting tinkering.

When you haven't seen a picture I can't see how you can comment - I'd reserve judgement till the pics are revealed Very surprising you managed to get a 83k ph1 for less than £1k Me too went looking and it seems they are out there at less than a grand - one of my all time favorite cars I've owned were both 205's and one day when I have some time and space I'll have another just to experience that wonderfull steering feel
