Soooooo finally get round to getting the car sorted yesterday after locking it in the shed at the start of Feb due to a busted head gasket.
A guy came round from the owners club and basically took me through it all as I didn't really have much of a clue what I was doing to be fair!
Head gasket was on in about three hours, just had loadsa trouble after getting the poxy little jobs like the airfilter back on etc.
As we were putting it all together however, noticed that area around the dowel holding the chain sprocket to the camshaft, was cracked and a part of it had even fallen off. ANYWAY, it was getting late, and we were of the thinking- it worked before so it's obviously OK....
Took the car out today.... started getting some tappety noises pretty much straight from the off, but still felt like a dream to drive, until, the bloody thing cut out
Turns out the dowel is no longer holding the sproket in place, so I effectively have variable valve timing.... just that it varies when it wants to, and never when useful Looks like I better strip the head down again tomorrow, weather permitting of course!!
Clickety click for how it sounded pre breakage, post HG change (Also worried I've got a bit of a radiator/air leak as well hence the checking the level etc) (Doesn't exactly sound healthy does it?!?!)
I bought the car in September:
-Thermostat broke on way home from picking it up on M25- Tow number 1
-Crashed it in Leeds- Tow number 2
-Drove back to Leeds, carb got blocked en route- had to strip it down
-Brakes went- Tow number 3
-Head gasket went pop
-Valve timing goes mental- Tow number 4
My car hates me
What an induction to classic car motoring 'ey?
