It's all Emdee's fault for posting this. I don't really like Ford Ka that much, apart from the StreetKa, and I definitely don't like soft five spoke alloys and I normally don't like blacked out headlight parts and yet... and yet... It's like that black Fiat Punto on the soft three spokes, I'm sure I shouldn't like it but the whole thing together looks so right I can't help but like it. This isn't me trying to start a thread on black hatchbacks on soft spoke alloys, it's me saying I like these cars even though I feel like I shouldn't on principle. You know what I mean, right?

The 90s is the next thing to come... Unfortunately, after that, the next nostalgia craze to come might be 00s TFATF curse word... And I was so happy that it finally went out of fashion.

The Ka will be a popular classic in 10 or 15 years time I reckon. It's got some key ingredients:
1: It's a popular first car, so people will get nostalgic about them 2: It's mechanically simple, so easy to maintain - a good "starter classic" 3: The design at the time was pretty fresh, and started the whole New Edge styling theme at Ford 4: It's a Ford 5: Most suffer rampant rot, making good ones a rare thing and parts vehicles easy to find
The only thing it doesn't really have is a sporting heritage, although the SportKa / StreetKa kid of redeem it.
I doubt they'll ever fetch Mk1 Escort equivalent prices - they're more like the Morris Minor or Triumph Herald of our time I think.

My mrs had a Ka when i first met her. A grotty grey 1.3 thing. Was probably the most fun thing to chuck around the back lanes i have ever driven. Even when we had to upgrade to a larger car i really didnt want to part with it so my father has adopted it for the time being.

I feel that Cosworth 5 spokes on other Fords is over-done. I love Fiats, Especially Puntos.

Kas are great little handlers. It is a shame they never fitted them with superior powerplants as PSA did with the AX family of cars (e.g the Xsara VTS and Pug 106 GTi) but then again where there is a will there is a way .

I remember both being cars that got people to sit up and take notice when they were introduced.
The Punto didn't really appeal to me, i preferred the two-box approach of it's predecessor, and that has continued to this day through a long bout of ignorance, fuelled mainly by ideas of poor build quality and performance. How fair this is, well i should probably re-evaluate, and like the 128 i probably will do when there are none left - after all, the little Fiats i have had have been fun to drive!
The first Ka i saw had a skin-head driving it, looked like an egg in an egg, i noticed the boot lid was the shape of a pair of pants and that was almost it for me - then finding out the two-stroke engine these were supposed to get had been panned, and Ford decided to only offer the thing with a 1.3 pushrod Kent lump. Great.
Only, it was - this engine was a good choice in practice, i soon got to drive a family member's one and it was fun to drive! Chunky wheel, better proportioned than it looked, handled well, nice. Not fast but had just enough in it to feel swift enough, and had a good spirit about it.
Still, i've never had one. Will i? They'll be one of the top classics in time to come, like the Anglia and Minor - they were a cult car, as popular as modern cars get, so they'll survive the cull reasonably well and it's inevitable i will own one at some point.

Ka's are great fun to drive. Not very powerful but the handling is brilliant! The later 1250 Zetec is a scream!

I agree, the Ka is a really fun car to drive! To me, it's the kind of car the new Mini should have been. I mean, BMW have made the new Mini a great commercial success, so there's no arguing with that, but I can't help but think that in a parallel universe where Austin Rover didn't implode and they invented the new Mini, it'd be something like the Ford Ka. Maybe even with a re-worked A-series instead of a Kent... I'll go and take my pills now...

Both the Ka and the Punto look pretty darn good to me...
When I worked for Ford I had a Ka Lux' which was a really nice little buzz-bomb!
I reckon that when they're all but extinct people will hanker after them...

I'm a bit gutted that I had to call a halt to the Area 52 track car project 'Ka-Vader' because the Ka turned out to be, quite literally, the most rotten car I've ever clapped eyes on. Like dangerously rotten. I am, however, really flattered that the Boxing Day 'Back to 96' 1 day, low budget transformation Punto is still being enjoyed. Even if not by everyone (I don't expect the rest of the world to understand my undying love of three spoke wheels!) From this: To this: ...for £100 all in and less than a days work one freezing cold boxing day. That was fun! LOVE Punto's, LOVE Ka's, LOVE three spokes.
