As most of you are aware I've sold the Scirocco and am in need of a new daily.
Here's my criteria:
Ideally a diesel / would consider a small cc petrol Economical Good enough to do 500 miles of motorway driving a week Low maintenance cost Reliable Comfy
Budget £2k..
I've been thinking about 306's, Golf's, Astra's etc...suggestions please!

306 tdi i've a 1.9 tdi and it's fantastic, i've managed nearly 60mpg and they're fast cars too. mines a p reg, and it feels safe, sporty and big for a small car. i expect the later hdi's are better as someone above suggested. they're really really great cars, you won't regret it mate.

Ive just bought a VW Bora TDI (PD130, 6spd etc.) and its another world compared to nearly every other car ive driven - it eats motorway miles - cruises at 90mph whilst still doing 45+mpg. If you could stretch another 500 quid or so you might be able to get one of the early ones (110 Non-PD, 5 speeder, still v.economical).
Failing that, Mk3 Golf TDIs are bullet proof and silly cheap at the moment, and it appears they only come in Dragon Green and 5 door with black steelies - approaching 'teh win' ?

A TDCI Focus.
They handle really well, the TDCI motors are quiet and smooth, and because there's zillions of them on the trader, they're nice and cheap.
Equally, my mate has a 1.9 306dT and he reckons it handles as well as the brand spanky new RenaultSport Clio 172/182s he had prior to it. Obv. straight line speed isn't as good but he flings it through the bends and loves it. Paid £700 las year on a 'P' plate and is only getting rid to get something bigger for his newly expanded family. I can have a word if you fancy it as he needs to sell it pretty soon.....? It's black, done 164k I think, alloys and half leather - some chips and marks but a good driver.

Mk 2's are far more bullet proof IMO and experiences.

my best mates got a MK3 diesel golf. it rocks over 140k - might be around 180k now - and just eats miles.
even when things break, they don't break enough to stop the car going!
from my experience i'd call them bulletproof!
