I have a mate who's going to buy a Mini from a family member. He's going to pay 300 quid for the following:
A Mini 1000, late '80s. In pretty good nick but its engine needs putting back into it.
A 1300cc engine of uncertain provenance that the family member assures him has had a rebuild.
A mini exhaust that apparently is for a 1300 Cooper.
I told him not to be so hasty because in my view he's buying a pile of bits not a car and he could do much better for not a whole lot more. Was I wrong or is he mad?

Mini prices have been steadily increasing of late, so it may not be that mad, if it's a decent shell and engine £300 sounds ok to me.
As long as your mate knows he is buying a project and actually puts it back together and gets it on the road it should be worth more than £300 once finished.

If the shell is in good condition then £300 is a bit of a steal...but more than likely it's got more holes than a tea strainer What age Cooper is the exhaust off - it might not be any good for the engine? I never trust someones word when it comes to engine re-builds...

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

:)TBH most of us are mad on here. I bet most of us have spent more on our cars than we'd get back if we sold them. It doesn't matter though, it's the pleasure that we get from them that counts.

If the shell is good and the engine runs then thats a decent deal. Unfortunately nowadays people pay stupid money for minis and mini parts. its ridiculous.

doesnt sound too bad providing the shell is in good nick, hopefully he can trust his family when it comes to engines. doesnt matter what mini the exhaust came off as the only different is they'l be a place for the sensor to locate on the down pipe on the more modern ones. these can still be fitted to earlier a serie engines.
with it being late 80's itl have disc brakes at the front so thats a plus point.

Maybe I'm wrong then. I just have a gut reaction against spending good money on a failed project, I've been caught that way before.

I concur. That is a massif good deal if it's a sound shell. Looked around with my mate for shells for a bit, couldn't find anything under £500 that wasn't like a fisherman's bucket.
