rover t series turbo engine & box how good r they? i've seen one in a mestro turbo & it went like the clappers, what are the known probs with them i've been offered an engine but unsure?

Brilliant engines i had one in my firenza wind the boost up and you get about 230 bhp good for smoking the tyres and i got a 14.6 sec quarter mile at the pod.I had planned on rechipping the ecu and bigger valves and all that but i chose to upgrade to the 5.7 v8 in the end  |

There are two main types of engine, distributed spark and wasted spark depending on the age of the engine and the donor vehicle, the 220 and 420 turbos used the distributed sparks and the 620 and 820 (IIRC could be wrong) use the wasted spark and also have a slightly deeper sump which removes the need for an oil cooler which the 220 and 420s had, can be found on the back side of the block. The engine will weep from the headgasket at the front right of the block if it is an original headgasket. A later metal layered "klinger" gasket will cure this, a small tab protruding gives the game away if it has one or not. Cambelt and waterpump will need changing, the waterpump housing bolts can sheer off so be careful, not too much of a pain. Belts and pumps are cheap and easy enough to change. Remove the standard BMV and install a proper boost controller, on standard internals, 12psi is the highest you should really run otherwise the pistons tend to melt.... The gearbox should be OK, but if it has been booted regularly in first gear or hammered in second then the diff can take some wear and might need replacing, check for play in the driveshafts if you can do as this should give any issues away.... The engine itself is very reliable, I did 20k with a normally aspirated engine in less than a year with no servicing done at all on the thing, just kept going! No problems with overheating or anything like that, expect it to leak a little oil from the headgasket and possible the cam covers ontop of the engine. The ring gear on the gearbox can wear where the starter bendix pushes in, was an issue with one box I had, sometimes it wouldnt turn over first attempt and would make a screech, but this isnt a common problem. With an exhaust, standard breathing modifications I would expect to see 210-220bhp. Price wise, few hundred quid depending on which parts your getting  |

a-ha my dad has bought a mint rover 400 & is mulling over the t-series turbo, we have theskills to fit it etc but not sure on these t series motors or the driveshaft arangement, i'm presuming the tomcat turbo is very simular as the 400, it seems a worthwhile motor to me, a good option for enought power in a rover 400 anyhow, did the 400 ever come with the 2ltr tseries turbo? basic exhaust air filter & up the boost a little as you say chaps i think will be enough for his needs :OP what boost controller would you say, we trying to do it as cheap as possible but keep it a reliable daily driver it wont have a dump valve that makes a sound, prob one of those recirculating types

did the 400 ever come with the 2ltr tseries turbo? Yes it was called the 420 GSI, see this Wikipedia entry about the T-series engine for full list of applications |

There was a 420 turbo but they're pretty rare. PPC had an article on T16 turbos a while back - they recommended fitting a boost controller and upping the boost to 13 psi on post-94 engines, 14 psi on pre-94 engines. Apparently the weak point is the conrods though...

aim for the 'm series' from the earlier 820 tickfords, just as cheap, but twice as rare, wont kick up a fuss if you wind them to 16psi with no mods, which should see you 230bhp  ade - what RWD gearbox did you run? |

The majority of the rover guys say don't go over 12psi on standard internals, with the M series pistons+rods 14psi. |

The gearbox is a weak point - standard cars can quite easily blow their gearboxes as they can't cope even with standard power. I believe you can upgrade the parts however to strengthen them. Excessive boosting in first gear will blow the gearbox and differential, the box can be rebuilt using steel caged bearings to help eliminate this. Not much point in boosting first either really unless your drag racing! Also make sure its full of gearbox oil, a crunchy gearbox i had after a fluid change to the correct level filled with MTF94 is now nice and sweet. |

My brother had an 820 Vitesse with the T-series turbo engine for about 6 years. He bought a bleed valve to up the boost and ended up not using it as he fitted a straight-through stainless exhaust, and saw an increase in boost.
Only engine problem he had was the head gasket soon after he bought it (as someone mentioned it's a weak point). In the last year that he had it, reverse gear was getting very noisy but all forward gears were fine. Only other mechanical problems I can recall fixing were ball-joints - it went through at least one every year.
I really liked the car, much preferred it to my Saab 9000. The Rover handled much better and was noticeably quicker and traction was better regardless of tyres. He only got rid of it because of the reverse gear problem and the rear arches were getting very scabby.
If you are getting a T-series, there are apparantly a number of different gearboxes attached, depending on what car the engine was fitted in; driveshaft attachments are different, and at least in the 800, there were two different bellhousings.

some good advice there chaps, its given me a better idea of what to look for, they are'nt a bad motor it seems, i'll be on the lookout for a 420 turbo or a tomcat turbo for cheap as chips for all the parts i need, i don't mind even if its a smashed up car aslong as its in the midlands 7 the engine go's as it should, fingers crossed i turbo something up soon

Theres an 820 turbo on ebay at the moment breaking, in Birmingham area.
I asked him what he wants for the engine, he says £140 which seems fair if its as good a runner as he says it is.
I'll have a look for it and send you a link.
Theres also a 420 turbo in rough condition on Ebay right now too, but thats already at £300ish which is a lot for what it is, but then they are rarer than he other Rovers with a T16...
