It has a points dizzy at the mo.
What exactly do I need ? Obv Dizzy / Coil / Balast resistor . . . anything else ?
It's an SD1 engine so possibly came with electronic ignition originally - I had to change it to points as the dizzy was scrap so whacked a points one on - seems to be fine but would prefer the leccy . .
Stoopid questions possibly - but never used em...
Cheers Rob

Talk to Bladerunner30 on this forum, he's doing it to his Rangie!
Basically he's MegaJolting it, he went on ebay.COM and bought the 8 cyl EDIS system from some american v8 Ford affair. Once you have that its basically the same as doing it to a 4 cyl, in total i think it costs around £80 as well so its none to shabby!
As a bonus, all the gubbins can be stuck inside the wagon so when your off roading (you do go off roading right? Else whats the point) you don't get any of the classic v8 mis-firing!

They are not always the most reliable of electronic ignition and you probably wont notice a great deal of difference in driveability if you do fit the stock leccy ignition. Megajolt would be better but more of a chew on.

erm... off roading ... no.. it has a sump clearance of about 90mm ! That sounds interesting... I was really looking to see if i could just pop a leccy one in from another car ? If you're there tho BladeRunner30 I'd like to know more. Rob

I don't know about megajolt but if you get a megasquirt you can use the standard dizzy with the advance mechanisms locked up and use the ecu to control the timing. You'll need to fit a crank sensor and wheel though. It seems a bit daunting at first but once you get your head round it it's fairly straight forward and the difference performance will blow you away. Failing that what about one of the aftermarket setups from real steel or somewhere like that.

erm, if all you want it electronic ignition just fit either a Luminition or a Pertronix Ignitor. I used the Pertronix on my old RPver P5B and it was a doddle to fit, looked stock and was done in minutes.

Woooo, only just found this thread, thought I could hear the calling somewhere.... Basically, the V8 in my Rangie already has electronic ignition in that it doesn't have points, it has an electronic dizzy (35DLM8 I think....). It works, but at best, the stock ignition system gives a really weak spark, and if you so much as drive NEAR a puddle off-road, it starts spluttering and misfiring.... The Megajolt system, basically uses the ford EDIS (Electronic Distributorless Ignition System) controller in conjunction with a 36-1 toothed ring on the crank, a VR sensor, a MAP sensor and the megajolt ECU and should give a much stronger spark at the plugs. The other advantage is that you can program your own advance settings into it - which is a major bonus for me, as I run on petrol and LPG and ideally need a different curve for each fuel... www.bgsoflex.com/mjl/mjl_edis.htmlCheers, M

Oh, and for a better idea of what you'll need, ask the question on www.v-8.org.uk, there's a wealth of knowledge on the Rover V8 there! Cheers, M

CHEERS GUYS ! I have an electronic dizzy now and the car is going in for a tune up with John Sleath shortly - I'm sure he'll let me know if i'm wasting my time (he adv me to get an leccytronic ignition to start with...)
Is there a vast difference (hehe) between the self contained Opus and seperate amplifier versions ?

No it's not, it's associated with the Rover V8 engine. Sheesh, some people! As for the difference between the Opus and seperate amplifier ones, I'm not sure. All I know is that I hear more tales of the amplifier not working than I do the other type not working...! Cheers, M
