I saw a modified Ford Probe when I was out today, it had hideous wheels and suspension was at a ridiculous height, and it had horrible stickers etc. etc.
but!
I reckon they could be done right,.. I'd be interested to know more about them, they are a cross over between Mazda and Ford I know that much (having had a ride in the Mazda equivalent in Japan, the Persona). I assume they are FWD? Do they rot? How much are they now? Has anyone seen a tasteful or restrained modification of one??

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I reckon they could pull off two tone quite well,... I think also with some 20"+ rims you could make a kind of mini bubble ,.. from the right angle it would look great.. from all others it wouldn't

Always liked the Probe, thought it had potential from the start. Everyone says they are curse word cars though, riddled with expensive problems. A couple of guys have run carbon fibre Probe drag cars and I always thought they looked ace, the shape lends itself to that pro stock look.

They are a Mazda MX6 in a different suit, identical mechanically. Same mazda engine inc the 24v 2.5 V6. Great engine if looked after with very regular oil changes. Prone to rings clogging ang worn oil control rings. If it smokes, don't bother.
Not bad for rust. Rear arches etc as usual. Quite robust mechanically actually as they are mazda not Ford, so decent quality. Timing belt change on a 24v can be about 4-5 hrs (same as on my Xedos and was loads of fun!!). Straight forward to work on really, just no space under the bonnet to get at anything easily. I spent nearly an hour trying to unplug the connection for the rear O2 sensor as no matter what I did, I just couldn't quite reach properly.
I am liking them more and more, but I don't think they really suit many mods. Slightly lower with some nice wheels is about as far as I would want to go.

I reckon they could pull off two tone quite well,... They were billed as 'the new Capri' when lauched wernt they? With that in mind, I reckon a two-tone blue and silver would work, like you see a lot of 2.8 Capris in. Along with maybe some pepperpot-esque wheels (not sure which), kinda like a tribute to the Capri it was supposed to be replacing. Not a car i've ever really got along with. Had to rebuild a crash damaged one at work once and it was just awful to work with. They are an attractive car though, plenty of potential I reckon.

it has got to be possible to acheive something from a probe other a krooze wagon. I saw a really rather tasteful calibra running around clacton the other day, so anythings possible I reckon pale blue metalic, raked on 14" wellers in silver with plenty of offset with 185/55 tyres over 8J rims ;D

Spookily enough I was only thinking about these the other day as I got offered one off a mates car lot that he's had sitting around for ages in his cheapie section. He said I can have it for less than half the screen price but it's in a bright yellow though, which has put the SWMBO off it I reckon they could look good with the "less is more aproach", i.e. clean, tidy, no kit etc, just slammed with dished rims FTW. P-chop anyone??

yellow has got to be done!
personally i detest them, they just seem so bland in a sportscar-esque manner. i cant think of any i've ever seen look right, not even stock ones lol! and they have a heavy engine and spin the wrong wheels...

I think Dom started off a thread about these a couple of month ago. Might be worth trying to find it and see what else was mentioned there.

I fancied doing a streamliner .....Lakes style Proper rake with tall tyres, moon discs, clean bodywork.....like really clean, no spoilers mirrors or rubbing strips Silver with big exhaust exiting through body just behind the front wheel, so you get the proper witness heat marks down the body Some simple timing style graphics and maybe some "nose Art" and it`d make a very cool and cheap daily driver I thought... Keefy`s NASCAR probe was cool as well ;D
