Had a spot of bother with my passat the other night....
The cooling fan seemed to stop working, but of course, the time I find out was the time I'm coming off the motorway, into leeds city centre at rush hour
So I'm sitting in traffic watching the coolant temp gauge get worryingly high. Luckyly I manage to turn off down into an industrial estate before anything goes pop.
So I stopped, popped the bonnet to have a gander, and the hose from the head to the rad top was looking alittle larger than it should. I took the cap off the expansion tank to relieve the pressure, then started to try and work out what was up with it. The only tool I had in teh car was 1 flatblade screwdriver
I pulled the connector off the thermoswitch on the rad and bridged the connector with the screwdriver and a key, and the fan didnt come on. So I figured the fuse must have gone... no t ideal when you don't have a spare!
So, my fix.... I ended up ripping a foot or so of wiring out that ran to the glovebox light, stripped it with my teeth and ran it from the + side of the fan directly to the battery so the fan was on permenantly.
Seemed to do the job and got me home ;D - Although I now need to replace the hose, as it's a bit stretched and kinda peaking it's elasticity. GSF don't do them - curse word. No problem, I'll call Volkswagen.. "Sorry Sir, we they are no longer available" WTF!
So on to Euro Car Parts... Getting one in tomorrow ;D
I was quite pleased with my little fix....
