Hi all, I just bought a 94 Corsa 1.4 auto.Only 48000 miles from new, and hadnt been used in the last 3 months. I Went through all the checks before driving off, oil very black but correct level, water ok etc. I drove it the 4 miles home and it drove lovely. Literally 100 feet from my house the oil light came on and it started sounding VERY tappety. Upon checking the oil level was fine, but it had turned to tar. I drained it out which took ages due to its thickness. Anyway new filter, oil in I started it up and drove it down the road trying to pump the new oil around the system. The engine died at about 20mph. Now it will only turn over very slowly. As its turning over slowly is it a case of dropping wd40 into the bores and hoping for the best or is it scrap?

Oil wont turn to tar in 4 miles i'd say it was curse word oil when you collected it and that has blocked the oil pickup and starved the engine of oil? if that's the case the engine is scrap, drop the sump and take a look at the state of the pickup.

If it was rotten oil in there, put the sump back on, take the rocker cover off and spray wd40 into the channels as well as into the cylinders. IF the engine was running okay'ish I would have put a few litres of derv in the oil and run it for 20 min to thin the oild out and get better circulation.
Don't turn the engine over by the starter when you are putting wd 40 into the oil channels, turn it ever so slightly but not fully over from the lover crankshaft pulley. 1/8 to 1/4 turns at a time between each dose of wd40. keep doing this for a few days, if the engine is savable it will free up and only cost you the wd40 if it doesn't free up then you need a new motor!!!

no point putting wd in if the engines seized up as it will be grinding metal already and spun bearings,.

Yup, WD40 is only any use if the engine has seized from being stood for years with damp in the bores. If it has genuinely seized up from lack of oil then I reckon your best bet is www.cartakeback.comEven if you do get it moving again somehow, all the bearings will be trashed - an engine that locks up from lack of lubrication will be due to the crank bearings picking up rather than the piston rings sticking or anything.

Might just be cam/s seized. Take the belt off and try and turn the cams.

I have seen a bush mechanic pull all the oil out, flush the whole lot with diesel (like 20 odd litres poured through) then refill it with oil to get it going. This was a "I am 400km from anywhere and will die soon" show, but it got them out of it, then you may just be up for some bearings to keep it going while you get a new motor

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

Similar to the above, in Africa we had an engine seize, and I mean seize solid. We pulled the plugs out, put some clean oil into the bores, and jolted it by hand until it freed off. Then we turned it over by hand to check how it felt. I guess we were lucky as it freed off and ran fine for a few thousand miles afterwards. When I last saw it it was heading off into the sunset in a cloud of blue smoke.
This probably won't actually help to be honest as I suspect you'll have bearing issues from the description - but there's loads of spare engines for the Corsa.

Thank you for the replies. The great news is I jump started the car and it ran Obviously whatever bound freed itself once it cooled down. It isnt smoking just oil light on and very tappety. Lesson learnt I'm now going to take the sump off, and clean it, the oil pickup and teh oil pump with paraffin. Hopefully that should do it?

I'de bung it through the auctions once you've done that and its running again if it sounds half decent, its not going to last.

We get signal.
What!
Main screen turn on.
It's You!!
Sorry, I too couldn't resist
EDIT: all joking aside, the damage is done now - driving at 20mph with the oil light on means that the crank and bearings will be shot. Wouldn't be surprised if the block was distorted around the bearings too...
