Hi guys,
Sorry to do this, but i need real person opinions!
I nearly ended up with an XJ40 about 6 months ago, but i couldnt raise insurance money quick enough. Renewal is coming up, and the price is the same for my diabolical 0.9 panda (which i would not keep even if you paid me) as it is for a 3.2 jag. Which is madness because the two cars are planets apart.
Seeing as I'm not far off renewal, ive ended up looking at them again, you have get one for sub 1k, and i can (or will be able to) insure one for less than the panda. And my dolomite for that matter, which is still a long way off the road.
Now i want you to tell me what they're like to live with. I'm a DIYer, and they're just old enough to mend most things yourself, fuel consumption is 25mpg at best but that what my Mini 1000 used to do with its fuel leak and my driving style at the time.
Will i be able to own one without constant heartache?
Thanks!

Main thing to look for is ROT! They do tend to suffer from the old tin worm, mechanically pretty rock solid, electrics do tend to have 'moments' I owned a 3.6 89' vintage for 3 years, and loved every day of owning her, only thing I changed was tyres, and two back boxes, sills had to be welded, see above! and the on board computer I swear had a random generated message system on it, came up with the most unusual alarms, but after getting used to it you kinda ignored it Find one with a decent folder of work carried out and you will not regret it Its on my bucket list to own another one For more info - Check out the XJ40 forum

Buy one. I've had loads of XJ40's and later X300's. Rock solid mechanicals, none of my Jags have ever let me down. Random electrical faults, which fix themselves almost as quickly as they appear. Check for rot, rear arches, sills, bulkhead on the later 93-94 cars.

I like what i hear so far!
Ive been saying to myself all year that i don't want another 'modern' (to me) car, but going by insurance prices i might as well for another year while i finish everything else off.
Keep it coming people, sound advice so far!

The 3.6 will have nigh on no difference to the insurance cost and it will be classic you have to have one, just to say 'you have had one'

Will it be any worse on fuel? Pretty negligible, my 3.6 round town was about low 20's. As they are Auto they move about barely on tick over when pootling about

I didnt have mine long, but it was no bother. A pleasure to drive and reliable.
Rot is the main point of concern, but I'm guessing your used to looking for that.

Go for a late one, they don't seem to suffer as much from electrical problems, the 3.2 or 4.0, late late battery in the boot cars have a modified firewall for the V12 and they seem to suffer worse from rot in that area. I loved mine, standard roof height was lower than a seriously lowered Polo at RR awards night parked up. I'd have another like a shot but i want a 4.0S or a V12 and i want a mint one so It will have to wait for the funds to magically appear. I loved the squared off styling and the twin lights on mine and it drove beautifully, mine even converted a long time 5 series owner to the Jag fan club and he bought an X300.

After just driving my knackered panda down a rutted, unsurfaced private road, i am 90% sold on the idea.
Standard ruined shocks, teamed with cut springs, a blowing exhaust, a caved in door, and various other non functional bits, i need a year of wafty motoring to recover.
My desired spec so far is something with a cream interior, not so bothered about the outside but pref not silver.
3.2 or 3.6 auto made in the 90s. As much service history as i can get, preferably full.
I know i need to check for rot in the front and rear arches, sills, doorskins and bulkhead.
I also need to check the oil cap for that white deposit to make sure the head gasket is ok. And for blue smoke out of the back.
Need to watch out for rear axle rumble and timing chain rattle, headlining needs not to have sagged and all of the electrical items need to work.
Can anyone think of anything to add to that?

Some of the bushes can be a bit of a pig to do so listen out for the usual clonks and whatnot, and any wanderyness- not that you'll be able to tell after driving a Panda.
I thought mine drove beautifully when I picked it up, but an inspection at a Jag specialists suggested I got a number of bushes done at the back and it did seem to make quite a difference, might have been a bit of a placebo I suppose!
I'd have another late one, mine was a '94 4.0S and it was spot on, shouldn't have sold it. The bulkhead had started to go though- I get the impression they are one of those cars where if you can see the rust it's already too late, especially at the front end.

They do look best in dark colours, mine was in good nick and was too good to turn down just for the colour though. I don't like silver cars and the last three I've had have all been silver. :S

I had a '94 3.2S. Bulkhead had been welded but it was starting to go under the rear window. (By starting to go, I mean nearly rotted a hole right through) Lovely car to drive but could never get acceptable fuel economy. Mid -high teens round town and mid twentys on a run. Looked and felt nice, but never really 'gelled' with it so sold it after 3 months.
Be warned, the large 'fish tank' retangular headlamps are shockingly expensive (around £120-140 secondhand)
Probably not what you want to hear, but I actually prefer my current W124 coupe to the Jaaaaaaaaaaag*

As for 'not that you'll be able to tell after driving a panda' - correct. Its going to feel like stepping from a squat straight into living in Buckingham palace, a little wanderyness will be nothing compared to the panda in the rain on its povo tyres. I had a '94 3.2S. *standard pronunciationYeah i expect atrocious fuel economy. My mini used to do 25mpg because it was curse word fuel out of knackered pipes so i recon i could cope with 20mpg average for the sake of all that luxury. I do hope i become a 'standard pronunciation', funniest top gear news segment ever!My basic logic was, ive I'm going to use what i consider to be a modern car, its got to be top end. I did also consider a BMW 7 series of the mid to late 90s as well but i got an insurance quote and it came back as £7000 so i wont be doing that! Jag is cooler anyway!
