VW GOLF MK3 2.8 VR6 < Starting to get rare...
COULD BE THE IDEAL TRACKDAY CAR?
200+ BHP & ££££'s spent...
I am about an hour out of London by train and am happy to collect you from the local train station
Well....where should I start with this monster?
Let me tell you the story as to how I came to acquire such a car....It was back in January this year my friend suggested I get involved in trackdays which immediately sounded like a great idea. With my passion for cars and speed, trackdays seemed like the perfect combination. Now for all of those that know me will know that I am all about as much fun as possible for as little as possible....so I set about looking for a possible trackday car candidate!
I looked at Porsche 944's (which are getting on a bit now), BMW's (but nearly everyone uses one for the track) then thought what would be a good trackday car, have potential and be quick........BRING ON THE VR6!
So here we go....I was living in Maidenhead (Berkshire) at the time and this car came up for sale in High Wycombe (South Bucks) and being such a short distance away it was worth a look. Truth be told, I found this car when looking for a part for my friends Mk3 Golf. The guy I purchased the VR6 from was going to break it! - I suspect because the full leather interior and engine/box etc. are worth quite a bit - A lot of people fit VR6 lumps in Mk2 golfs as they are a little lighter...So I saved it from its fate! It had been stored in a guys warehouse in High Wycombe as he just wasn't using it. It had a slightly sticky hydraulic lifter which ticked a little but this was because the car hadn't been driven for such a long time. Once I took it on its first track-day, within 10 minutes of getting out on the track it had free'd itself up and was running silky smooth!
I have bled the entire brake and clutch system and it now has ATE Super Blue brake fluid in which decreases the risk of brake fade - the last thing you want on a trackday! - It is running stock pads and discs as I was going to take it on a trackday near standard and then use those results as a base and work up from there...
I bought the car minus the interior as at the time I wasn't bothered, this was to be a track-day car so shifting weight was my main aim! I did then think that if ever I do come to sell this car on like now, someone may want to use the car on the road again so I have a Mk3 GTi interior which comes with the car (front two seats currently fitted - will try and fit the rest if I have time before the end of the auction but not promising). Owner will just need to find 3 doorcards (drivers I left in place) from a GTi which shouldn't be too difficult with all the Mk3 GTi's there are out there on the road still! 2 rear window mechanisms also removed to save weight but again shouldn't be difficult at all for the winning bidder to find alternatively a few blocks of wood to hold the windows in place will do if you are to continue using it as a track-day car!
The car has lowering springs fitted and you could really feel the difference when turning into corners - very little body roll.
It also had a stainless steel Milltek exhaust from manifold all the way back too which is at least £400's worth.
M3 Style rear lights smarten it up and bring it bang up to date.
It has also been chipped and to say its quick would be a huge understatement.....ITS RAPID!!....in its former life it belonged to West Yorkshire Police so I imagine it was an unmarked car just like Essex Police as they use unmarked R32's. It has full service history all stamped up in the book. Again this can be verified by calling West Yorkshire Police and quoting the registration number.
2 weeks ago it was running a little lumpy and had a misfire, I bought a brand new coil pack from GSF for £78 and bolted this on....hey presto she was smooth and even quicker!!
1 week ago I had the inner track rod end changed as this started knocking and then as you do, I had the tracking done again and now it pulls nice and straight.
On a slightly more cosmetic note....the plastic sill strip that goes down each side is a common rust victim and these strips are incredibly difficult to find in good condition - I have just replaced the both though...it was the drivers side that got a little rusty so took the old one off and new one on - certainly smartens it up!
Car has had the oil and oil filter changed less than 10 miles ago (2 weeks ago)
I would suggest changing the plugs as they are probably due a change (I have 6 brand new NGK plugs which we can talk about otherwise I will just return to EuroCarParts)
So all of the above sounds great and I truly love this car and only used it for 1 track day and got a puncture just before lunchtime (hence why there is a GTi alloy on the back - new owner will receive 3 GTi wheels as well as the standard 15" BBS alloy wheels) so have only used this car for a maximum of 4-4.5 hours of owning it and done maybe 200 miles!? if that....!!! This car just isn't getting the use it deserves and its not doing it any good being parked up for months at a time only to be used for one day here and there so I hope that the next owner loves and cherishes it and is able to use it more than I have. I started it up the other day and the hydraulic lifter is a little sticky again where it hasn't been used but a good hard drive will free this up. Like I say, it just isn't being used and I've found out that cars hate being parked up!
There you go! Whether you buy it for the engine and gearbox or decide you want to continue using it for track-days or even use it on the road I'm sure you'll be happy
So this car was only used for one track-day....I have setup my own business and having recently moved house I'm having a bit of a clear out and clear up - I've also bought a 4.2 V8 S4 for the track - some argue it could be a bit heavy but we'll soon see...
If you have any questions then please feel free to get in touch and I'll do my best to answer them as quick as I can for you.
NO TIMEWASTERS - If unsure then quite simply please do not bid. I list this car to sell not for someone to come down, have a look and kick the tyres.
I wish you all the very best of luck
Thank you for looking

I forgot to add...
Currently fitted is a cone air filter which a lot of people have a mixed opinion about as some people actually say that the car doesn't produce as much power with one of these fitted as if it had an enclosed panel filter. The reason being as these engines produce alot of heat and as you can imagine, the heat produced by the engine goes straight back through the air filter....of course they really want cold air...so.....if you are to use this on the track then it might be worth returning it to a normal air box and then pop a K&N air panel air filter in. Its personal choice really..
Oh and the other thing is it has a (what was back in 1998) quite a high tec Toad Alarm system...
Thanks and good luck - a lot of watchers on this one

Just so everyone is clear, the Tax and MOT have now lapsed as this was my trackday car and used for one day every 2 months! and then I would tow it to the track on my trailer!
Don't think it would want much to go through another MOT. Another tyre on the front maybe? but come and have a look for yourself. I have had everything I know needed changing changed as didn't want to take this out on the track with worn bushes/joints etc.
