Looking good Rian, I always think black really suits these.
Nice work on the rust repairs although I probably would have also tackled the rot inside the sill too. Have you cleared out the hood drains? It's usually a blocked drain that causes the rot to start in the first place.
As for the cat (de-cat), the import Eunos' aren't type approved so they don't need to have a cat fitted for the MOT. I de-catted mine and it wasn't an issue at the MOT. Had it been a UK model, it would have failed.
Also, if you need any particular bits, give me a shout, I've still got various boxes full of lots of MX5 stuff. Switches, trim, window regulators etc etc. if I have anything you need, I can bring it at the weekend.

Oh, and the model you have is a V-spec. The wheels aren't original and nor is the wood effect console or the gear knob. It also looks like the steering wheel might have been replaced with a 'standard' Momo one although I can't remember if the black V-specs had the Mardi wood wheels or not?
I'm pretty sure I've got an original V-spec Nardi wooden gear knob in one of the boxes, certainly a proper black centre console too....and also some original V-spec alloy pedals & footrest. Just in case you were thinking of putting it back to original?

Hi Bruce. Inner sill just wire brushed with a heavy hand abd underseal applied VERY liberaly. Have looked as much as I could at drains and seem OK. Unless I am missing something.
I know wheels are not standard. Happy to keep them but will refurb them and paint silver grey.
Interior needs a few bits.
Nicola desperately wants a wood rimmed steering wheel but I cant do that money right now. She loves the wooden bits which is why I restored the handbrake too. Also have new leather gaiters on order for gear and handbrake as well as a rubber gaiter for trans tunnel.
I also need a tonneau cover for the roof.
I want to wire one of the reverse lights as a fog light as the one fitted does not work right now. And it means removing the horrible lump hanging out its rear.
Re Cat.... Are you saying I can cut it out and replace with a straight through section there?
Thanks for the replies and comments.

Looking good. Out of interest, did you replace/treat the inner sill as well? If you're not a fan of the dangling fog light, you can get a red bulb to put in the driver's reverse light to tidy up the rear a bit ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Wire brush and underseal bodge. Will be going for fog light conversion.

Put it this way, my MOT man said he couldn't fail it for having no cat because there's no type approval data for the emissions of my car due to it being an import. I pointed to a 1995 Skyline (also imported) that was in the workshop and asked him if the same applied to that. "Sure does, that's why it also doesn't have a cat" was his answer. I think I have a tan tonneau cover at the unit. And a wind deflector, and a wooden gear knob. I'll double check later and let you know. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Worked in Central London today, so when I got home eventually I had a cuppa tea, and Google'd setting the handbrake on one of these. FAIL. So I referred to the Haynes book Paul the seller had given me, and managed to figure it out. You can either do some setting on the handbrake lever or you have a proper adjustment screw on the rear hub area. Once I had the car high on a jack, I did the two sides and believe we now have a handbrake worthy of an MOT. I also removed the rear Fog light ( and hope it does not constitute a fail) Some spares landed today as well, and will get fitted next weekend. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin63_zps6b46d883.jpg) Fingers crossed for the MOT test tomorrow.

Been busy with a few things yesterday, after returning from the Gathering. Got given some dark fabric seats by a MX5nutz-er in Scotland for Nicola's car as the leather ones added to the blandness of the interior and were scuffed etc. They were driven down by Bill in his yellow Escort 1600 Sport. So then traveled part of the trip back in the rear of the Chevy, and at Buckingham where I collected a pillar drill, they were moved into the Grizz-Pod trailer. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/Billybob111_zps79f4f11e.jpg) Cleaned and serviced..... ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/Billybob112_zpsdceb5218.jpg) £80.00 well spent on the garage. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/Billybob113_zps1e522262.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin69_zps8e3f7115.jpg) Back home I cleaned them up, though they were clean already. Also needed to re-assemble them. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin70_zps23ea47d1.jpg) Before the show I had managed to buy some spares from Mystery Machine who had brought them along, saving the postage. Thanks Bruce. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin71_zpsaf022312.jpg) Needs resto. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin72_zps8dab3fad.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin73_zps480398e2.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin74_zps73ff81f0.jpg) I had also bought a stainless "radiator protector" from MX5nutz last week, another completely pointless bit of shiny add on for the car. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin75_zpsd3f24b0e.jpg) New tonneau cover tested..... Old seats in place. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin76_zpsa03315f6.jpg) Then Post Man Pat arrived and I had a dressed up wife come down the garden, wearing this.... ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin77_zpsb6eb6120.jpg) As I was busy prepping the car for its retest for the MOT, I told her to unpack the item, soon she was back. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin78_zps69c9c920.jpg) 10 minutes was all it took to fit the new seats, which may be a bit of a "Marmite" option for some.....lucky they do not have to live with it. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin84_zps2afac6e6.jpg) One of the failures at MOT test was a snapped drop link. On inspection, it seemed the other was fractured as well, so I replaced both while I was at it. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin80_zps1b69d5b7.jpg) I had also replaced the indicators as both on the care had cracks, one of the replacements was not perfect, but still is better than the original. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin82_zps3ce6b028.jpg) Then the fun started. I had to split the tie rod ends etc, my tools were not up to it and rust had had a good time over the last 21 years. Fortunately the local garage had the right tool, making splitting them, to replace the rubber dust caps a lot easier. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin81_zps2dcbef9a.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin83_zps5aa296ce.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin85_zps25116382.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin86_zps803b1f45.jpg) I eventually finished the job at 20.45 last night. Today after work I fitted a load of bits to the car, including the lather gaiters, and a new gearbox rubber tunnel cover\gaiter. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin87_zps75388303.jpg) Chrome style bar fitted tonight as well. Tomorrow afternoon is retest time and also two new tyres to get fitted. Then tax and hopefully Nicola can start using the car.

I feel your pain with the front ball joints - I just changed all mine whilst doing a suspension swap a few weeks ago. What should've been finished by 6ish ended up taking until 10! Best of luck for the retest ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

In my unlimited stupidity, I never realized I had to remove with a Dremmel or some force the metal rings on each of the rubber boots, so cut the old ones off with a sharp knife and plonked the new rubbers on top of them. So job needs redoing but Nicola forced/convinced me to take it to the local garage to get new discs and pads fitted all the way around which was a job on the books as the brakes were at 29% below function and 30% is a fail. So the guys will redo the dust covers while the ends are open for disc replacement. I am peeed off that I did not know or realize that I shpuld have removed more material before refitting new items, but then my day job is as a gynaecologist.

Good work - nice to see someone getting stuck in!
It is a shame you just plated the sill as that will be through again in no time at all. It all needs to be cut out and replaced with stable metal. I know time / money and skills aren't always available but it looks like you have the skills......
Also, did you change the seats due to the wear on the leather? If so, you can buy excellent leather dye repair products that will get rid of all of the surface damage so long as the leather doesn't have holes......

Quick update. Car now has two new Bridgestones on the rear. Unfortunately, MOT did not happen as I did not realize one needs to remove all of the dust covers on the steering rod ends, so Nicola insisted I leave that to the professionals now..... car booked in on 3rd September for new discs and pads all round as they were absolutely buggered when we bought the car, even though it just scrapped through the MOT on function. The dust covers will then be fitted correctly. I have replaced the front indicators with much tidier, non broken items. Also a new battery cover in the rear. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin88_zps8200062d.jpg) Sat watching a recorded episode of Topgear last night as I never get time to watch it, but had brought in the used ally pedal covers I bought off Mystery Machine last week to clean up while watching telly. First thing I did was wash them, then used 400 grit followed by 800 grit wet n dry paper to sand them down. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin89_zpsef65da54.jpg) Followed by an extended session hand polishing them with Wenol metal polish. Not perfect, but an improvement, now she can start scaring them all over again. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin90_zps8d5f4504.jpg) Fitting them onto pedals later this morning. Also want to see if I can figure out the wind/fly screen behind the seats and fit it as well, then big job is opening the drivers door panel and figuring out that window...... not looking forward to it.

Just in from the garage. Tonight it was me, the cordless drill, some pressure and then the pedal covers were fitted. After which the new floor mats Nicola had sneakily ordered for the car went in. The black seats and mats have now come together for me. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin91_zpsd8678316.jpg) New leather gaiters on gear stick and hand brake also add to the picture. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/merlin92_zps6073ee09.jpg) Last item I need to fit will be the fly screen behind the seats. In the mean time I will keep looking for a stupidly cheap hard top and a Wooden Nardi wheel to restore......
