Hi,
I think I'm missing something with the auto gearbox adjustment on my 1986 500 SEL.
If I adjust the cable so that part-throttle kick-down is responsive, and the change-up revs are correct, the manual down-change from the gear-lever stops working (or at least, it only works occasionally).
If I slacken the adjuster cable, the manual change works perfectly, but the gearbox is reluctant to kick down and changes up too early, even on full throttle.
The gearbox was rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago and seems in good health otherwise.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Thanks
John

did you check the oil level? autoboxes can act strange if the oil is low.

Its always worth doing a filter change on an autobox as they get neglected. Has the kickdown ever worked correctly at the same time as being able to shift manually?

+1 Oil and filter change.
Does it have a 'Standard/Economy' switch?

Didnt realise these boxes had a manual downchange ,usually the box will only change down into the gear chosen if the revs are below a preset level Benzworld, org is a mine of information for stuff like this

I'll check again, but it was checked not long ago and doesn't show any sign of leaking Its always worth doing a filter change on an autobox as they get neglected. Has the kickdown ever worked correctly at the same time as being able to shift manually? Yes I think so. Although the kick-down has never been quite 'keen' enough for my liking. It's possible there is a 'sweet spot' on the adjustment where kickdown is just about adequate, and manual downchange still works +1 Oil and filter change. Does it have a 'Standard/Economy' switch? Yes. Do you think that is significant for this problem? Didnt realise these boxes had a manual downchange ,usually the box will only change down into the gear chosen if the revs are below a preset level Benzworld, org is a mine of information for stuff like this Yes, as well as D, the gear lever has 3, 2 and 1 positions to allow manual downchanges. Some more detail, after experimenting with it: - Start off from rest in 1, 2 or 3 and it will operate correctly, not changing up beyond the selected gear. - Change down from D to 3 whilst driving only works if engine revs are above 2500 when I move the lever Also, there is som very slight play in the lever (a few mm). I wonder if there is a separate adjuster for the gearlever that I need to attend to? Thanks all! John

Is yours one of the boxes with the extra low first gear the car only ever uses if you bury your foot from stationary? (Traffic light grand prix mode)
If it is I've always found they kick really hard up through the gears in that mode but otherwise they do everything they can to be smooth with early up changes and slow manual down changes, admittedly I've only have had "old" ones so it's possible all mine were a bit worn.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

The E-S button makes a lot of change btw, in E it will NOT change down when put your foot down, only if you use the kick switch under the pedal. It also makes it change up at no more than 3500 revs (by memory)

Pretty sure it would be for that year, normal operation is 2-3-4, 1st only engages when you have a "high load" like flooring it or towing

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.
