All this talk of spring and the glimmer of that yellow thing occasionally, has me thinking of these beasties! --- doesnt go without questions and concerns though... Some don't have roll cages/bars! And how do these screens get 'made' anyone know? Cut you say? where can this be done? beetle.cabriolets.online.fr/gallery/piranha.htmlApart from cool looks what do Baja's and Buggys offer over 4x4's? is weight on the back wheels good for offroading? or is it just for fast stylish blasting across roughish terrain rather than trecking over lumps and bumps! Big pic www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/227170.jpgWTF not retro, but I like: also does not have roll protection! www.vox.de/auto/news_842328.phpnewskool Ooofff BIt of a VW fest, not absolutely intentional, but please add to what ever you have.

To cut a laminated screen don't you do something like, score both sides with a glass cutter, then heat up the screen witha blow torch to soften the plastic, then break the screen along the score line. Cutting the stretched and softened plastic with a knife.
I seem to have a vague recolection of this method being described during a chopped minor build up in either custom car or street machine 10 - 15 years ago.

cant comment on off road, but on road my buggy doesnt get an awful lot of grip. not much of a problem though since its pretty slow. still an enourmous hoot though! don't worry about a roll cage, the rest of the car will have long since disintigrated before it rolls ;D

reanimation - most cars (thinking vws here) that have 'chopped' screens don't have chopped glass. they simply have a new piece of glass cut to fit i quite fancy building a buggy one day ... Wheres a pic of Bryns, his looks awesome!

Baja bugs started out as cometition cars for the Baja 2000 which is a desert race. Its pronounced Bah - hah. They were dead popular for a while over here as a craze in the late 70s/early 80s, called Badger Bugs by us brits. Beach Buggies (originally called Dune Buggies) are generally acredited as having been invented by Bruce Meyer after his Plymouth got stuck in the sand after a beach party and he noticed a few sandrails blipping past, based on Beetle floors with the body removed. He thought "hey, if you put a groovy fibreglass body on one of those things you'd have a cool little car...." Interestingly enough I notice Meyer has put his original Manx buggy back into production as a revised version called the Manxter now using Scooby power. The only thing that bothers me is a mate of mine at work lost his arm and one leg (and was technically dead a couple of times in the operating theatre) after a buggy crash. Loads of info on the Manx club www.manxclub.com/history.htmAnd the Manxter webby www.meyersmanx.com/

there was an article in a mag ages ago about chopping screens, but can only be done if not toughned. You score both sides, then crack along the score. Then you put lighter fluid in the crack and light it, this melts the plastic lamenate.

you can cut laminated screens with and ordinary glass cutter, just do one both sides then fill teh gap with petrol and light itr, it'll mely the plastic in the middle and you should be able to just pull it apart.
very easy to break them though.
