I have some questions about a car I know very little about. It’s a 1980’s Mazda 626 SDX. I don’t know the year exactly but it’s the 2.0ltr. A quick search on Ebay for consumables like filters, plugs, dizzy caps etc shows that the parts are reasonable. As for the engine, I don’t know much about it. I wanted a little detail info on why I should or shouldn’t stay clear.
Thanks
Mike

Looking on Ebay at parts, it doesn’t look like I’d have much bother with all the regular things needed. Apart from that, what’s the car like to live with? I currently own an 80’s classic and am aware they are not always for everyday use. There isn’t a lot of these around so I don’t want to make a big mistake!
Thanks
Mike

I have some questions about a car I know very little about. It’s a 1980’s Mazda 626 SDX. I don’t know the year exactly but it’s the 2.0ltr I think this might be your problem - your vague description means it could be any one of three different models of 626. There's the CB (RWD) which finished production in 1982: The GC (FWD) which ran from 1982 to 1987: And also the GD (FWD) which was produced from 1987 until about 1993 I had a 1990 GD (5dr 7 seat estate 2.0 auto) and it was a fantastic car. Supremely comfortable, stupendously reliable and just a brilliant car to own. Most people thought it was bland and anonymous, and it probably was, but it was one of the nicest mile munchers I've had. Just effortless. I sold it a month back and do actually miss it. The 2.0 certainly won't set the world on fire, but it will just keep going and going...and is a nice smooth engine. All 626's are rare now so finding knowledge on them is going to be hard, but as long as it looks well kept and up together, and not too rusty, then I don't think you can go far wrong. Here's my recently sold one - a veritable symphony of forgettable light gold and brown. Just perfect!

Ahhh... that one. Have a look IN HERE for more pictures. A cool car for sure and it looks like it's in good condition too. RWD will mean it's always going to be worth more than the later FWD ones.

Amazingly for that period they did not rust all that badly and I saw a good few knocking around NZ roads when back last. The 323s of the same vintage were tough little beasts but engines smoked a bit at higher mileages.
Like MM I, too, had a brilliant run with a GD and I miss it. If a tidy 2.0 exec manual comes up somewhere I would be very interested.

Jim inwatford yes it is that one. So looking at the history from this thread, the new owner hasn't had the car long at all...I just hope everything is ok with the car... Thanks for the replies people. Going up on the train tonight to collect.

Looks like the current owner probably bought it from this ad at the start of the month. It was up for £1200 then, but who knows what he paid: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1982-MAZDA-626-coupe-retro-classic-Sold-/130937231617?clk_rvr_id=505777592712&nma=true&si=oAjbwbLuvCqF0xTWv1rYXKNHdAc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557I remember when the car you are looking at first surfaced about 2 years ago - it had been sat in a garage unused for about 15 years and even had emulsion paint still spilt on the back bumper! I think it had some sort of running issue, hence the long-term standing. It would explain why it's still relatively rot free. It's better known as a 626 Montrose, and they are now super-rare. Imho the earlier model with chrome bumpers is a little prettier, but they are lovely looking j 80's coupes regardless. Brettmrc from this forum owns this rotorised beauty, which I've always yearned after! Keep us all posted of the outcome - I hope it comes to join the fold!

one went on ebay the other day just before the blue one came up for sale... and sold for 1220, probs why the guy who owns this one thought it was time to sell. the other one had only done 43k and was much much better condition. the 2.0 8v is aparently very slow (this wouldnt really bother me) and it shares alot of its running gear with mk1 rx7 including its heavy steering from having steering box. (this doesnt bother me either) rotary transplants are pretty common as it allready shares rx7 genes, and the full electrics is pretty cool for a car of its age. id recomend it but I'm tempted to bid aswell ;-) so errm its rubbish avoid!
