It's a 1997 Corsa 1.4 Ecotek.
The engine light is on almost all the time, comes on seconds after starting. Car runs well, apart from an occasional stall after a run. Engine revs drop very low and it stalls. The throttle sometimes "hunts" too, only does this when warm, but not when cold or first started.
Asked the garage to check, but their modern machine couldn't "read" the old ECU in the Corsa!
Any suggestions?
Thanks

My guess is the exhaust sensor, that's where I would start anyway

No point in just guessing and replacing parts for no reason. Have a look on the topbuzz website it should tell you how to read the fault codes from the ecu using a paperclip or something.

Is it drive-by-wire on a '97? The motorised throttle bodies get clagged up on the DBW car causing similar symptoms and the repair is to remove the throttle body and clean it out with carb cleaner.

My reader has trouble with the late 90's ECUs on vectras snd corsas as well, paperclip it and read the codes off the flashing light (google how to do it)

Not drive by wire and I thought that was a joke about the paperclip.

If theres an idle control valve I would give that a really good clean with brake cleaner or something similar. Yep paperclip trick is real have done it myself.

I had a 95 16v corsa. It was automatic and idle was bad and would stall when making turns in the road or other low speed driving. I took the EGR valve off and put a blanking cover on then bolted the valve back on and connected. No more engine light and idle was good. Sadly the engine light came back on when I changed the head gasket few months later and had lack of power. Timing was good ect never run right again. I spent a week doing the work but oddly I sold the car for £450 even with all the faults listed. I hated the damn thing. blanking covers on ebay. pita to fit. Also you can check the throttle hump hose because I bet it's split. It's not cheap from the dealers. I ended up buying a silicone hose. You need a 65mm ID hose. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150mm-Long-x-Silicone-Hose-Coupling-Connector-Pipe-Silicon-Rubber-Joiner-Coupler-/170731918190?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&var=&hash=item27c06a536e#ht_1697wt_1249Just pick 65mm and whatever colour. Cut it shorter too. Also the vac hoses fail and cause odd idle.

Well, I "papercliped" it, very easy to do and it came up with EGR valve fault. Which Google tells me is very common, tried cleaning it, no good. It looks like someone has had a go at it before, because gasket is missing! New one ordered, so thanks everyone. And keep your fingers crossed for me!

And a new EGR valve cured both the engine light and the hunting/occasional stalling.
Wasn't too pricey at £28 either!
Thanks
