Hi,
Just bought a polo mk2 coupe, its a Parade so its registered as a 1.3.
Its had a 1.1 put in it, and I'm wondering if i register it with an engineers report, will insurance be lower ad its a smaller engine, or will they see it as a modified car and increase the cost?
Thanks

They'll probably increase the cost as its a modification from standard + it's going to cost for an engineers report. It was in the cheap tax bracket anyway wasn't it?

Depends on your insurer, not all will want a report. the only way to find oout is to ask them

I'm not worried about the report, i can get that very cheap, but i'm 17 so the smaller the engine the better really

I reckon this "engineers report" thing on engine changes is a bit of an urban myth. I've changed dozens of engines and never been asked, I've never heard of anyone needing one done nor have I heard of anyone offering to do one! However, telling your insurance company is very very unlikely to decrease your insurance. Most mainstream insurers would increase (or more than likely cancel the policy if you're 17 and on a standard car policy) as the car is now "modified". Makes no sense really but that's how they work.

I have done a few reports for people after the DVLA or insurers have asked, in the case of the DVLA it is to check that they are not trying to get cheaper VED or the engine is not nicked and in the case of insurers they want to know if it really is a smaller engine or one that would be fitted originally to that type of car and it hasn't been too modified.

When I was young (1974/75) a mate offered me his 1968 / G reg MKII Lotus Cortina cheap. He was struggling to sell so the Lotus lump was being removed as somebody interested in that and a 1600GT fitted. My insurers said they would still class it as a Lotus and not a 1600GT. I got a Mini Mayfair auto for my son when he was 17. The plan was to convert to manual gearbox (just gearbox change - same engine) but insurers said it would then be classified as modified and additional premium applicable. I'd say ask you insurers how they would treat the change of engine.

I took the 803cc engine out and replaced it with a 660cc turbo lump with 4 times the power and my insurance went from £127 to £84
Insurance went its down as its all statistics and computer models...
They did ask who fitted it, I said me, asked if I had any engineering or mechanical background, I said no, i'm a dull IT technician and he seemed happy enough.
V5 got sent off twice, first time came back wanting a report or some from a garage , sent it off again, someone else dealt with it, came back proper

When i swapped my old diesel out for a V8, my insurance just told me to tell them when it was done. It helped that it was a Land Rover 110, and was made in diesel and V8 forms, and that it was a Rover Eight that was going into it. As long as it was similar to 'land rover offerings' i think it was ok ... had i been trying to fit say a twin turbo v6 toyota/honda etc etc it would have been different.

The thing to do is call the insurance and say that you are "thinking" of doing it, and explain that the car was available with that engine option from the factory. If the start sucking air through their teeth just say ok and leave as is. If they say it's ok and will cost less then wait a week and say you've done it. Failing all that just build a hot 1.3 as you suggested.
